   Maynard eyes his Seventh Palos Verdes Marathon crown this weekend (Daily Breeze)
James Maynard will be looking to capture his seventh Palos Verdes Marathon title when he defends his crown in the forty second running of the event. The Palos Verdes Marathon, which is a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, features a winding, sloping course that boasts a steep, three mile incline between the twenty and twenty three mile marks, but also offers a cool breeze and a view of the ocean much of the way. Maynard won last year at age thirty nine, when he finished with a time of 2:41:45.

Fritz Van de Kamp won last year's marathon with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes and 51 seconds. He took the lead around the fifth mile and held on to win. He beat perennial champion Maynard, who took second in 2:43:35. Maynard has won five Palos Verdes Marathons since 2000, including in 2005, when he finished in 2:38:30.
