More than eighteen-hundred pounds of running gear was shipped to soldiers in Irag who are planning to do a shadow run of the Seattle Marathon on November 29. The Baghdad event will mirror the races in Seattle with a marathon and half-marathon available to soldiers.

   Seattle Marathon claimed by 2 first-time winners (Seattle Post Intelligencer)
Over 12400 runners took place in the 38th running of the Seattle Marathon. Record participation also provided two first time winners. Stuart Burton of Beaverton Oregon, and Annie Thiessen of Tacoma won the men's and women's marathons respectively.

Annie Thiessen won the Seattle Marathon in 3 hours, 2 minutes, 6 seconds. She won by nearly one minute. Seattle marks yet another victory for Thiessen including Yakima River Canyon,Whidbey Island, Tacoma City, Olympia's Capital City and the Newport Marathon.

   Seattle Marathon loses UW as title sponsor (The Seattle Times)
The University of Washington Medical Center is withdrawing as title sponsor of the Seattle Marathon; but will continue to contribute some money, as well as medical care and water for runners. Speculation states that this may have been a consequence of The Seattle Times article that reported that less than 1 percent of the marathon's $1 million-plus revenue goes to charity. The UW Medical Center was to have paid $140,000 to help stage this year's event; but will pay $70,000 instead.

The Seattle Marathon, known for being a primary fundraiser for the University of Washington Medical Center's Patient and Family Housing Fund. The marathon has agreed to an audit of finances following unease as the University of Washington Medical Center who spent $125,000 as a race sponsor received a check for $8,346 from a marathon that raised more than $1 million.

The University of Washington, the principal sponsor of the Seattle Marathon, wants to bail. The bad news occurs on the heels of rumors that the races executive director Louise Long admitted to verbally abusing employees. The are also reported conflicts of interest on her part with companies doing business with the marathon, and board members quitting after she resisted attempts to have an audit done. This also occurring at a time when the races financial statements are falling under scrutiny.

   UW should set pace for Seattle Marathon review. (Seattle Times)
University of Washington Medical Center gives $125,000 to the Seattle Marathon for sponsorship of the run for charity event. Participants also pay up to $120 to enter. With nearly 1 million raised in revenue why was only $12,000 given to the Living Legacy Foundation, a non-UW organization promoting organ donations. Runners would have to be aware of a very subtle point to make a separate donation for the charity. This low-key approach resulted in the marathon association last year giving just 1 percent of its revenue — $12,000 —

   Martin, Steidl win Seattle Marathon on hill (Seattle PI)
Andy Martin, 2nd in last years Seattle Marathon, won the Seattle Marathon in 2:27.11. It was the first time in 9 years Uli Steidl did not win the marathon. Martin was joined by his wife, Megan, and his two sons as he crossed the finish line. Both Martin and Trisha Steidl used the steep climb up Galer Street to put away the competition and claim victory.

While Uli Steidl will not make it 9 in a row at the Seattle Marathon, his wife, Trisha and approximately 15,000 others will venture onto the course on Sunday. Steidl has dominated the marathon over the last 8 years and will relinquish his throne and opt to run a 50 miler in early December.

Seven years ago, three-time Olympic Marathon qualifier Alysun Deckert, a registered dietician at the University of Washington Medical Center, brought a group of transplant patients together to train for the Seattle Marathon. The Seattle Marathon will have to fix some scathing reviews and fix them fast. A recent report showed were only 1% of the revenue from the fund raising marathon actually went to the charity. The race organizers stated that only money that is donated above and beyond the entry fee is sent to the charity.

Trisha Steidl, head coach of the Seattle University cross country and track and field teams, and her husband Uli Steidl, also one of her assistant coaches, made history at Sunday's Seattle Marathon by becoming the first husband-wife combo to win the event.

Steidl, 33, a native of Erlenbach, Germany, who now resides in Seattle, won his seventh consecutive Seattle Marathon in 2:24:24, topping his fastest time on the course.

   German wins marathon (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER)
Uli Steidl hadn't planned to run the 26.2-mile course until volunteering to pace someone as a "rabbit." But before he left the Westin Hotel exposition, the 27-year-old native of Erlenbach, Germany, decided to enter. The decision paid off yesterday as Steidl broke free from a pack of runners in the Seattle Arboretum and cruised to his second career marathon win with a time of 2:30:05.

The 30th Suzuki Seattle Marathon expects to handle in excess of 10,000 runners for Sunday's race.
