World record holder has a long road a head of her if she plans to run the 2012 London Olympic Games in attempts at an Olympic medal that has so far eluded her in Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing. At the Beijing Games, Radcliffe kept pace with the leaders until 19 miles; but lack of training and in some pain. Radcliffe finished 23rd in 2:32:38.

With only two weeks of outdoor training, world record marathon holder Paula Radcliffe would not quit the 2008 Beijing Marathon like she did in Athens. Radcliffe was overwhelmed by her 23rd place finish and the extreme pain she felt at the finish, while Pauline Curley who is the oldest woman in the field and representing Ireland, was elated with her 63rd place finish in 2:47.16.

Kenya's Catherine Ndereba outraced China's Zhou Chunxiu over the final 50 meters to win her second straight silver medal in this event in a 2:27:06. Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe, the world record holder, suffered a calf injury late in the race and was well out of contention, finishing twenty-third. American Deena Kastor pulled out due to a broken right foot about five kilometers into the race. American Magda Lewy also didn't finish thanks to a knee injury.

Deena Kastor broke her foot during the Beijing Olympic Games Marathon which forced her to drop out of the race.

It was a terribe pain her left calf that caused Paula Radcliffe to stop twice and finally hobble to the finish line of the Olympics Marathon in 23rd place. "I felt like I was just running on one leg," Radcliffe was quoted as saying about her race.

   Curley set to realize life's ambition in Olympic marathon (Offaly Express)
Pauline Curley who is representing Ireland in the women's marathon at the 2008 Beijing Games will be putting twenty years of training to the test in the predicted hot and oppressively humid conditions. A knee injury almost ten years ago threatened to put an end to her career but she fought back from that to become the most successful female road runner in Ireland over the past six years. Curley qualified for the Olympics with a 2:39.05 at the 2008 Rotterdam Marathon, just two minutes outside the 'A' standard and a new personal best by over three minutes.

Defending Champion Mizuki Noguchi's withdrawal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics women's marathon days before the race had been a tough decision; but considering her training had been plagued with injury since Athens would leave her with a questionable performance. After canceling appearances at the 2006 Berlin Marathon and 2007 London Marathon due to an injury to her left leg, she also canceled appearance at a 30K race and a half marathon due to eczema. Noguchi suffered a hamstring injury while training in St. Moritz and has been unable to get back to peak form for the Games.

The Japanese Athletic Association has given defending women's champion Mizuki Noguchi up to three days to decide on her fitness before letting her participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Noguchi has injured a muscle and semi-tendinosus muscle at the top of her left leg and has been unable to carry out full-scale training for the past two weeks. Noguchi's condition has been improving with treatment.

Athens Olympic women's marathon champion Mizuki Noguchi will be given a few more days to prove she has overcome a muscle strain that is threatening her bid to defend her title in Beijing. Noguchi left altitude training three days earlier citing fatigue, but manager of the Japanese team she runs with stated she had complications stemming from pain in her left thigh and her groin. Japanese women have won medals in every marathon since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Yuko Arimori took silver in Barcelona and bronze in 1996 at Atlanta, and Naoko Takahashi won the 2000 gold in Sydney.

After tales of emu oil, a broken femur and, most recently, a poisonous spider, the latest calamity to hit Paula Radcliffe is a Category 8 storm that hit Macau has left her trapped in the Team Great Britain's hotel. Heavy rain today hit the region and forced Team GB to remain in the Westin Resort Hotel forcing marathoner Radcliffe out of critical training days leading up to the women's Olympic marathon. The wind speeds of 110 kilometers per hour shut down all activities at the Olympic equestrian venue in Hong Kong as well.

This four-time winner of the Boston Marathon stated that a gold in Beijing is her ultimate goal. Ndereba won silver in the 2004 Athens Olympics, contributing the loss following a victory at the Boston Marathon title.

Zhou Chunxiu has high expectations for the Olympic Marathon in Beijing on her home soil. She won last years London Marathon in a time of 2 hours and 20 minutes and recorded the fastest time of the year for the marathon. Her many accomplishments over the past several years are noteworthy considering she walked away from running in 2000 only to return several years later.

   Beijing Olympics: Women athletes are going hungry for success (Telegraph UK)
Susan Ringwood, the chief executive of Beat, a British charity that helps bulimics and anorexics, who has worked with athletes and coaches about how to spot the signs of eating disorders has made a statement that a hidden epidemic of sportswomen either starving themselves or repeatedly binge-eating and vomiting. While research has shown that a fifth of elite female athletes are suffering from an eating disorder, Ringwood estimates that around forty percent of the female athletes at the Beijing Olympics could be at risk of an eating disorder with pressure to perform and look good being a driving factor behind this.

   German Mikitenko ruled out of Olympic marathon (Guardian UK)
German Irina Mikitenko, winner of the 2008 London Marathon, will miss the Beijing Olympics because of a back injury. Mikitenko, who was preparing for Beijing at a training camp in Switzerland, decided to pull out after a complex injury to her back and pelvis spread to her foot. Mikitenko is still new to marathoning, as this former Kazakhstan Olympic 5,000 meter runner debuted in her first marathon last year in Berlin finishing second. The women's Olympic marathon takes place on Aug. 17.

Maria Portilla could not participate in physical education class in high due to complications from a hernia. She worked for her destitute family and was soon forced into a race without shoes. Ethiopia ’s preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics has been meeting with team conflicts. Following a physical fight between Bezunesh Bekele and 2008 Bonston Marathon winner Dire Tune over who deserves the last Olympic spot on the team, men's marathoner Tessema Abshiro aimed a gun at Olympic hopeful Deriba Merga. After receiving a check-up, UK Athletics is giving a deadline of less than twenty-four hours before the Olympic marathon in Beijing by which to confirm her fitness to race. Radcliffe is receiving such privilege since she is a world record-holder, a world champion and one of Great Britain’s only hopes to medal.
