   Lemoncello steps up to marathon (BBC)
Scottish runner Andrew Lemoncello has abandoned the 3000m steeplechase to focus on training for the marathon at the 2012 London Olympics. Lemoncello arrived at the decision due to his disappointing finish at the Beijing Olympics, where he was eliminated in the steeplechase heats.

Marting Lel was fifth at the Beijing Olympics. However by virtue of two of his marathon victories over the past year he won the World Marathon Major Series and collected his prize of half a million dollars.

   Ritz: 9th at Olympics (Rockford Independent)
Dathan Ritzenhein finished the 2008 Olympic marathon in 2 hours 11 minutes and 59 seconds for ninth place overall and the top American. He was one spot ahead of famed Olympic Trials runner Ryan Hall. He said that cramps and tight hamstrings caused him to stop in the later half of the race near the 30K mark.

   Big Bear Valley watches the marathon in unison (Big Bear Grizzly)
Ryan Hall, was in Beijing, China, to compete in his first Olympic games, the town of Big Bear was gathered at the Big Bear Convention Center to watch. The weather was hot and muggy—in China and Big Bear. The temperatures were in the mid 80s as the marathoners finished the race. Hall finished tenth with a time of 2:12:33.

Ireland's Martin Fagan’s Olympic dream came to an end when his achilles tendon flared up causing him to drop out about eight miles from the finish. At the start Fagan could be clearly seen as the lead group set a blistering pace.

South Africa's Hendrick Ramaala summed up their countries feelings about the Olympic games in China when he acted surprised at the marathon pace for the first 10K. Khotso Mokoena jumped 8m 24cm with his fourth jump in the long jump to earn silver and salvage a very disappointed SA team.

   Olympic Marathon meltdown for South Africa (The Times)
The Beijing Olympic Men's Marathon left much disappointment in its wake for South African runner Henrick Ramaala, in his fourth Olympics, who crossed the line in forty-fourth place in 2:22.43. Ramaala, who was close to tears after the race, was training for a 2:08 marathon and was rumored to be upset, because Athletics SA had allegedly reneged on an earlier agreement that they would pay him to focus on the Olympics. TV footage of the marathon, shown in South Africa, showed Ramaala had picked up the wrong water bottle at the first feeding station and had gone back to sort out the mess.
 
   Stanford's Hall comes up just short in marathon (Palo Alto Online)
Former Stanford All-American Ryan Hall, champion of the 2008 US Olympic Trials Men's Marathon, couldn't repeat his performance at the 2008 Beijing Games. Hall finished in tenth place and fellow American Dathan Ritzenhein finished ninth. Hall completed the marathon in 2:12:33, six minutes behind the winner Kenya's Samuel Wanjiru.

   Röthlin finds his balance in Beijing (IAAF)
Swiss national Viktor Röthlin may not have medaled at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Men's Marathon; but his achievements are praised as his sixth place finish time of 2:10:35 was the fastest finish for any Swiss runner. Rothlin who won bronze at the 2007 World Championships was also the best Non-African marathon runner in Beijing. Rothline who trained a short time with elite marathoners Lel and Cheruiyot coaches himself.
 
   Overcoming tumultuous year, Wanjiru takes first Kenyan Olympic marathon victory (IAAF)
Twenty-one year old Kenyan Sammy Wanjiru made history as he won the 2008 Beijing Olympics Men's Marathon by being the first Kenyan to win gold and by setting an Olympic record in 2:06:32 despite the ninety degree weather. Wanjiru's win was also a triumph as an achievement for a nation that started the year in such turmoil that many of its runners were forced to flee for their lives. Wanjiru who plans to run the Berlin Marathon now has Haile Gebrselassie’s Marathon world record in his sights.

Dan Robinson was pleased with his twenty fourth place finish in the men's marathon at the 2008 Beijing Games. The punishing pace and the heat and humidity took its toll on most of the field and slowly Robinson edged back into it to finish in a time of 2:16.14. Robinson represented Great Britain.

   Ramaala blames drugs test (Sprot 24)
Hendrick Ramaala placed 44th with a time of 2 hours 22 minutes in the Olympic Marathon. Ramala stated the having blood taken prior to the race for drug testing purposes was the cause for his poor performance. Dr Shuaib Manjra, medical chief for the Olympic committee said that the 5 to 10 milliliter samples was unlikely to be the cause.

   Malinga trails in marathon, finishes 31st (New Vision Online)
Uganda's dream of winning a medal ended yesterday, after Alex Malinga finished a distant thirty-first in the men’s marathon race. Though he tried to stay with the lead pack when the race started under a good weather, he dropped off half-way through the course. He clocked 2:18:28. Malinga admits he did not have enough speedwork in his training to keep up with the field.

   Osaki out of Beijing Olympics Marathon (Daily Yomiuri)
Satoshi Osaki of Japan has withdrawn from the men's race today at the Beijing Olympics due to pain in his left hip joint. Osaki becomes the second Japanese to pull out of a marathon here after Mizuki Noguchi, who dropped out of the women's race due to a thigh strain. Japan Association of Athletics Federations will not be replacing Osaki.

   Marathon gold for Kenya's Wanjiru (Joy Online)
Despite the searing heat and high humidity, Kenya's Sammy Wanjiru won the Olympic Gold medal in the men's marathon with a time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 36 seconds. This was Kenya's first Olympic Gold in the marathon.

Australian Lee Troop who is coached by four-time Olympian Steve Moneghetti is looking for a top ten finish at the men's marathon at the Beijing Olympics. Troop cites injuries and fatigue as the reasoning for his poor performance at the 2000 Sydney Games and the 2004 Athens Games. Troop at thirty-five years of age is injury free and confident for race day on Sunday.

Alex Malinga will rely solely on the medical staff of the Beijing Olympics for his support and cheering section. His team medical director is on a flight Saturday night roughly 13 hours before the Uganda will run his Olympic event. Dr.Ntege Ssengendo will join the rest of the national team that has left Beijing prior to the closing ceremonies.

   Gebrselassie regrets opting out of Beijing Olympics marathon (Reuters UK)
Marathon world record-holder Haile Gebrselassie who feared that the pollution in Beijing would ruin his health regrets pulling out of the Beijing Olympic Marathon event. Gebrselassie says the weather has been perfect every day he has been in the city. Gebrselassie ran to a sixth place finish in the men's 10,000m on Sunday.

Marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie plans to race at the London Olympics in 2012 even though he'll be almost forty.    Kenyan marathon star to replace injured Cheruiyot at Olympics (China View)
World marathon champion Luke Kibet an alternate on the Kenyan Marathon Team will replace injured Robert Cheruiyot at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Cheruiyot pulled out of the Beijing Olympic Games on Saturday after aggravating a thigh injury he first sustained in Italy. Cheruiyot is deeply saddened by his inability to compete.

Defending Olympic marathon champion StEfano Baldini of Italy must rest for three days after picking up a thigh injury. There has been no discussion of whether this will affect his plans to run the Beijing Olympic Marathon next week. Baldini has had a year of injuries, after finishing twelfth in the London Marathon and soon discovered he had a stress fracture of his left leg which put him out of action for almost a month.

Acclimating to the climate and training elsewhere, distance runners from Kenya are slowly arriving to Beijing. The Women's Marathon team consisting of world marathon champion and Athens Olympics silver medallist Catherine Ndereba, Martha Komu and Selina Kosgey have one week before their race. Kenya's men's marathon team of London marathon champion Martin Lel, Chicago marathon champion Robert Cheruiyot, world champion Luke Kibet and world half marathon record holder Samuel Wanjiru is expected in Beijing on the 17th August 2008.

   Hall gets Olympic send-off (Inland Valley Daily Builletin)
The community of Big Bear Lake, California gathered to give top U.S. marathoner Ryan Hall a farewell ceremony prior to his departure to Beijing where he will compete in the marathon at the 2008 Olympic Games. Hall and family will not be in attendance for the opening ceremony, but will watch from the Olympic village before flying to the coastal town of Dalian to begin his training leaving him some days to train prior to the men's marathon on August 24th.

   NBC aims for marathon Olympics (Financial Times)
NBC Universal who has purchased the rights to air the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will feature an astounding 3,600 hours of coverage over the seventeen days of the games. NBC's owners General Electric paid a grand sum of $894 million for the rights. Although many are hopeful that viewership will be increased for this Olympics, rumors are circulating that GE may try to unload NBC Universal after the games.

A heavy blanket of smog covers the sky in Beijing just days before the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games. Visibility was down to a minimum and locals were adorned with face masks to protect their lungs and eyes from the thick stinging air.

The Kenyan marathon has stepped up their training as Boston Marathon winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Selina Kosgei have intensified their long runs and speed work in Soy, soon will be joined by London Marathon Champion Martin Lel and team alternate World Champion Luke Kibet. World Champion Catherine Ndereva and Half Marathon World Record Holder Samuel Wanjiru — are training in the UK and in Nyahururu.
 
   Ritzenhein, haunted by 2004, eyes Olympic medal (Michigan Live)
At twenty-five, Dathan Ritzenhein, will be attending his second Olympics competing in the marathon distance at the 2008 Beijing Games. Believing that long distance runners can only compete well through their mid-thirties, Ritzenhein hopes that there will be four Olympic appearances in his future if he stays healthy. Complications from a stress fracture in his left foot prevented him from finishing the 10,000 meter track event that the 2004 Games, but after successful races following the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, Ritzenhein is looking forward to Beijing despite earlier setbacks in the year from hamstring and foot problems and anemia.

   Athlete managers warned to keep distance (CBC Sports)
Athlete manager Jos Hermens, manager to Haile Gebrselassie and others elite runenrs, denied reports he has been suspended by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation over unwanted intrusion into Ethiopian Olympic team preparations. Hermens represents all three men competing in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Beijing Games - Haile Gebrselassie, the current world marathon record holder, and Kenenisa Bekele, 5,000 and 10,000 meter world record holder, and Sileshi Sihine who won silver medals at both the 2004 Olympics and the 2007 IAAF World Championships. The rumors circulating were caused following the Ethiopian Federation made changes to the Olympic team replacing athletes already named to the team with alternates, which Hermens says he has nothing to do with.

   Marathon contingency plan in place (Guardian.co.uk)
Beijing Olympics organizers said they had a contingency plan for the marathon should pollution force a rescheduling or a postponement of the Games' final athletics competition; but details of the plan have not been revealed. The International Olympic Committee has said it may reschedule events that require physical activity of more than an hour if pollution is bad on the day. The contingency plan for the marathon is there. Officials do state that there may be a different schedule in case of pollution; but that will be before the closing ceremony on August 24.

Half Marathon World Record Holder Sammy Wanjiru is ready to tackle the marathon distance at the Olympics Games. Far from a veteran in the 26.2 mile distance, the young half marathon specialist who has run two marathons only (2:06:39 in his debut marathon at Fukuoka and then 2:05:24 at the London Marathon) strategizes for the race by breaking the race down into two halves. Wanjiru's next goal after the Olympics is to set a new World Record at the 2008 Berlin Marathon.

Brian Sell, Hansons-Brooks runner on the 2008 U.S. Men's Olympic team, has been leading his life as he normally does working in the garden department of Home Depot and moving the grass after an early morning high mileage run to prepare for the Olympic Games. Both he and fellow teammate Dathan Ritzenhein will wear a cooling vest designed to lower body temperature similar to those worn at the 2004 Athens Games. Both have been training in conditions mimicking the heat and humidity of Beijing.
 
   China announces emergency Olympics smog plan (CNN)
With the 2008 Beijing Olympics just over a week away, China has put in emergency measures to deal with the smog calling for more factories to close, a complete halt to all construction projects and further reduction of the number of vehicles on the streets at any one time. Doctors say high levels of pollution can hurt performance, especially for endurance athletes like marathon runners, who breathe in more than ten times the amount of air of an average person. The pollution will cause inflammation and irritation to the lungs and aggravate existing asthma conditions.

Ayele Seteng, who is set to represent Israel in the Marathon at the 2008 Olympic, was arrested in his native country Ethiopia. Israeli Sports Minister Raleb Majadele is hoping Ethiopian authorities can expedite the proceedings so Seteng will not miss the Olympics.

World Record Marathon Holder Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie, considered the world’s greatest distance runner, has been named to his country’s Olympic team for the 10,000m. Despite Gebrselassie’s decision against running the marathon due to poor air quality, the Ethiopian Federation is allowing him to return to the 10,000 meter track race. Geb is no stranger to the track being the former world 5,000m and 10,000m record holder and having won gold medals in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games at 10,000m, and four consecutive IAAF World Championship gold medals at 10,000m between 1993 and 1999.

   Browne Comes Up Just Short In Marathon, 10K (West Linn Tidings)
In 2004, American Dan Browne made history by competing in both the marathon and the 10K in the Athens Olympic Games, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished in decades; but Browne had failed to qualify in either distance for the 2008 Beijing Games. Browne, unable to find a good pace at the track trials in Eugene, Oregon last week, is not discouraged. He plans to run a fall marathon.

The marathon coverage of the Olympics Games was compared by the USA Today report to coverage on the first landing of human on the moon. The Games organizer scheduled big-time morning action that NBC can air live in prime time.
