   Keflezighi's Gold Chase a Marathon (Washington Times)
Many believed that Olympian silver medalist Meb Keflezighi would be a sure bet for the 2008 US Olympic Marathon Team, but some things don't work out as planned. After having a few seasons battling with food poisoning and injuries, Keflezighi had calf pains at miles 15-16 of the 2008 Olympic Trials hurting his performance and costing him his spot on the team. Although not discouraged, Keflezighi looks forward to July 2008 where he will attempt to make the US Olympic team in the 10,000 meters.

   Ryan Hall Running for Ryan Shay (Sports Illustrated)
Ryan Hall experienced the best day of his life and the worst day of his life when he won the 2008 US Men's Olympic Trials Marathon and learned that one of his closest friends had died during the same race. Hall and his wife were teammates with Ryan Shay's wife when they were at Stanford University. Hall who is one of the three runners representing the US in Beijing is dedicating his run for Olympic gold to Shay.

Medical researches are looking for answers in the death of Ryan Shay. Ryan's father, Joe Shay, stated that Ryan was diagnosed with and enlarged heart at 14 and repeatedly cleared by medical doctors to run and compete. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the scientific term for an enlarged hearts is often indiscernible in elite endurance athletes.

I came across the group at 6 a.m., in the predawn darkness of Saturday's U.S. Olympic men's marathon trials. I remember the time because I wrote it in my notebook under the glare of headlights on Central Park West in New York City. It was 1 1/2 hours before the race, but Eileen O'Dowd was already busy at work. She was near a folding table distributing T-shirts promoting the 13 Olympic trials qualifiers from the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project in Rochester Hills.

   Autopsy Inconclusive On Olympic Trials Runner (kdka.com)
An autopsy of elite runner Ryan Shay was inconclusive Sunday after the 28-year-old collapsed and died in Central Park at the U.S. men's marathon Olympic trials a day earlier. Diagnosed with an enlarged heart at fourteen, Shay was cleared to compete as an elite athlete because having a larger than normal heart is not unusual among elite athletes. Shay and other top athletes underwent medical testing in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he trained and he was cleared for running.
