Despite searing heat and the worst conditions event organizers had seen in years 23-year-old David Rappleyea of Henrietta won the Rochester Marathon in 2 hours, 37 minutes and 39 seconds. Jill Skivington, 28, of Rochester was the first woman to finish just missing the 3 hour barrier by 3 seconds. Race officials were forced to shut the race down near the 20 mile mark around noon as hospitals said they were over loaded.

Bradshaw captured the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds in his third career marathon. Skivington finished in 3:05:10. Carolynne Jones of Rochester was second in 3:09:01.
