   Pittsburgh Marathon to return after five-year lull (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)
Pittsburgh Marathon will return in May 2009 with title sponsor Dick's Sporting Goods. The 2004 race was canceled because the title sponsor, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, pulled out. Then-mayor Tom Murphy said the city couldn't afford to pay the costs of extra police protection and cleanup because it was on the verge of bankruptcy and laid off over seven hundred workers.

Violetta Kryza of Poland set a personal best time when she won the women's field at Sunday's Pittsburgh Marathon in 2:31:45. The 33-year-old pulled away from her closest competitors at mile 11 and ran alone the rest of the way. She knocked nearly two minutes off her previous personal best.
 
   Pittsburgh Marathon: Mistake at Heinz Field leads to win (Pittsburgh Post Gazette)
Reuben Chesang of Kenya used his experience and planning to win Sunday's Pittsburgh Marathon in 2:14:53. Chesang, who studied the course the day before the race, took advantange of Eliud Kering's misjudged turn at the entrance to the final stadium laps and took the lead to win by only few precious seconds. Chesang said he was determined to win the marathon and would have despite Kering's miscue.
