Michele Suszek of Westminstar won the women's race at the ING Miami Marathon on Sunday. She passed the leader in the last half-mile of the course, for a winning final time of 2:43:31.

   Hollywood's Korir finishes fifth at Miami Marathon (South Florida Sun-Sentinel)
Mike Korir of Hollywood couldn't finish the 2005 Miami Marathon because of cramps and muscle spasms, but he crossed the finish line on Sunday in fifth place, with a time of 2:35:13. Korir passed 10 runners in the last 6 miles.

   Late wrong turn at Miami Marathon leaves runner in second place (Palm Beach Post)
At the ING Miami Marathon on Sunday, Jynocel Basweti of Kenya was leading the race by 10 seconds near the 20-mile marker. He then followed a video truck which police mistakenly guided off course, and found himself 15 seconds behind by the time he got back to the course. As a gesture of sportsmanship, the directors of the race awarded Basweti $5,000, which was equal to the first-prize purse.

   Italian Benazzouz Slimani wins Miami Marathon (USA Today)
Benazzouz Slimani was the first European to win the Miami Marathon despite veering off course near mile 19. Slimani finished the last 6 miles with a feverish pace to take the title in 2 hours and 16 minutes and 49 seconds.

Logistics expert Ted Metellus has been named race director to succeed Robert Pozo, the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon race co-founder and only race director of the six-year event. Metellus, a logistics expert, was event manager for Eventage and also managed dozens of large scale competitive road races for the New York Road Runners Club, including the New York City Marathon. Pozo and other marathon co-founders, wife Gaby Pozo, and Frankie Ruiz, remain with the company in major roles.

   Garcia, Lijleblad win Miami Marathon (S.I.)
Jose Garcia, of Guatemala finished the Miami Marathon with a time of 2:17.43 which was good enough to win. Garcia pulled away in the last mile and a half to beat Kenyan runner Samuel Kiprotich, 2:18:14, and Ethiopian runner Demesse Tafera, 2:18:29. Kelly Lijleblad held on to win the women's race in 2:47:13, beating Russian runner Nedezha Tuptova, who had a time of 2:48:09. Brian Sell of Rochester Hills, Mich., set a new course record in the half marathon, finishing in 1:03:46.

Kelly Lijleblad of Boulder, Colorado, won the women's race in 2:47:13, beating Russian runner-up Nedezha Tuptova who trailed by a minute.

   Sell sets course record in Miami half marathon (Palm Beach Post)
Brian Sell, US Olympic Marathon team member, ran a personal best and a course record of 1:03:46 at the Miami Half Marathon. In the marathon Jose Garcia, of Colombia won the men's race and Kelly Liljeblad of Boulder, Co. won the women's race.

More than 10,000 runners, including an international elite field, competed in the 2008 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon. Jose Amado Garcia of Guatemala, the Pan American Games silver medalist, won the 26.2-mile marathon in 2:17:43.    Headphone ban falls on Miami runners' deaf ears (Miami Herald Tribune)
For safety reasons, USA Track and Field, the sport's governing body, prohibits the use of iPods and other headphone devices in running events; but the Miami Marathon is not enforcing the ban. Race director Robert Pozo does agree that headphones, mp3 players, sunglasses with flap-down speakers and the like are hazardous, but he is following the lead of the Walt Disney World and New York City Marathons.
