This weekend marks the thirteenth year of the Mount Mitchell Challenge and the Black Mountain Marathon. Mount Mitchell is the highest point in the Eastern United States. Runners will ascend more than forty-three hundred feet during the first 13 miles of the race.

   Bryant wins Mount Mitchell Challenge (Asheville Citizen-Times)
Jason Bryant, the champion of the 2008 Mount Mitchell Challenge, overcame a bloody nose five minutes into the 40-mile race and a wrong turn at the summit to become the first new male winner of the ultra-marathon in six years. Bryant crossed the finish in 5:16:49. The Mount Mitchell Challenge has an elevation gain of 4,324 feet for this 40-mile run in the first 20 miles of the race. Jared Crave won the 26.2-mile Black Mountain Marathon men's race in a 3:16:42. Annette Bednosky was the top female finisher in the marathon with a time of 3:54.58. The Black Mountain Marathon is run at an altitude of 5,340 feet.

   Harlan takes Black Mountain Marathon again (Citizen-Times)
With just a few miles remaining in Saturday's 40-mile Mount Mitchell Challenge, two-time defending champion Will Harlan wasn't thinking "three-peat." But once back in town and realizing he would eclipse his winning time from last year, Harlan revved his pace to the low-6-minute range and came charging around Lake Tomahawk as a sun-baked crowd at the finish line roared its enthusiasm and amazement.

   Pinnacle Springs Turns Into River During Black Mountain Marathon (Asheville Citizen-Times)
Mark Lundblad and Beth Nabers were winners in this year's Black Mountain Marathon. Runner's are claiming this year's event to have been the most difficult, with the trail having been washed out by river flow before the event. Runners were getting their feet stuck in the mud, and some fell into patches of ice face first. The Black mountain race up Mount Mitchell has been rated one of the 10 toughest trail races in the United States by Trail Running Magazine.

Snow, ice, flooded trails, gale-force winds, fog, lightning and torrential rain can pretty much summarize this year's Black Mountain Marathon. Runner's had a difficult time finishing the 40-mile Mount Mitchell Challenge due to horrible weather conditions. Mark Lundblad and Will Harlan are two competitors who represented Asheville, NC in last weekend's race.
