Kyle Gallagher: The Next Marathon Man?
(Hesperia Star) January 20th may have seen the birth of the next marathon man. Kyle Gallagher, at the age of 18, set out on a quest to run a relatively fast marathon before he graduated high school. His time of 2:44 was good enough to earn him sixth place at the Carlsbad Marathon. Gallagher who was usually over shadowed by another lead runner from his high school recorded the fastest time in the marathon for his school by over one minute from the previous record of two hours and forty-five minutes set by 2004 grad Stuart Patterson.

Kenyan Nytipei transforms late entry into winning drive at Carlsbad.
(The Union Tribune) Kenya's Jacqueline Nytipei showed up late for the half marathon and sped from her ride right to the races finish line winning the 1/2 marathon by 20 seconds narrowly missing the course record. In the marathon Tesfaye Dirba of Ethiopia, took the men's race by four minutes in 2:19:26, and Diona Fulton of Somerville, Mass., raced to the women's title by well over six minutes in 3:07:56 despite difficulties over the final seven miles.

Mostly affecting recreation runners, the concept has also been adopted by the Carlsbad Marathon. The ban, passed in December 2006 by USA Track & Field, the sport's governing body, has sparked a national debate among runners.

(Union-Tribune Publishing Co.) Ivory Coast native Bassirima Soro, who now resides in Arizon, took San Diego Marathon victory in 2:25:3 last weekend, and won $1,500 in prizes. He will use it to continue his business importing marathon runners from his home country. The women's race was won by Alena Vinitskaya of Belarus for the fourth time in five years in a time of 2:39:41. She went home with $3,000 from the event. She did not break course record which was set at 2:37:5 in 1999.

(San Diego Union Tribune) 43-year-old Andrey Kuznetsov, a Russian who's lived in the United States for the past three years, won yesterday's San Diego Marathon in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 39 seconds. Kuznetsov beat American Danny Gough by 1 minute and 19 seconds. The women's winner was Alena Vinitskaya of Belarus. Vinitskaya beat 43-year-old Mary Burns-Prine who finished second in the Memphis Marathon last month.

2nd place San Diego Marathon finisher Danny Gough's running career underwent a sea change
(San Diego Union Tribune) A few years ago, Naval officer Danny Gough revived his running career by training on a supply ship. Gough trained everyday on board the ship, sometimes running as much as 22 miles in extreme heat. In October 1999, he placed third in the 1999 Steamtown Marathon in Scranton, Pa. His time of 2:18:55 qualified him for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and he hopes to have a shot at the 2004 Olympic Games.
