   Kenyan, 19, sets Baltimore Marathon Record (Baltimore Sun)
Julius Keter won the Baltimore marathon with a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 56 seconds that broke the previous record of 2 hours 14 minutes and 51 seconds set in 2004 by John Itati, also of Kenya. Keter also broke the state marathon record of 2:13:46, set in 1977 by Garry Bjorklund. Maria Portilla of Peru won the women's marathon with a time of 2 hours, 36 minutes and 32 seconds. She finished second in the Baltimore Marathon last year, with a time of 2:36:23.

   Record Crowd Expected For Baltimore Marathon (WJZ)
Among the record setting 18,000 runners participating in the Baltimore Marathon will be John Schafer. He is a type I diabetic and a former cigarette smoker turned personal trainer and helping other people get fit. Runners from all 50 states and 28 countries will be participating in the marathon

   Cheruiyot wins Chicago Marathon (KBC)
Kenya's Evans Cheruiyot won the Chicago marathon title in a close race. Cheruiyot won $140,000 in prize and bonus money, and Russian Grigoryeva took home the $100,000 first place women's winner's check. The victory did not come easy for the 26 year-old Cheruiyot as he broke away from runner-up David Mandago, 30, of Kenya in the 25th mile and won the men's race by a minute and 12 seconds in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 25 seconds. Mandago was second.
 
   Another Hot and Steamy Marathon in Chicago (The New York Times)
After running the Chicago Marathon on a cloudless day with the temperature in the mid-80s, 30 degrees too warm for an optimum race of 26.2 miles most of the 33,000 participants place the provided ice bags on their heads to cool down. Evans Cheruiyot of Kenya won Sunday in 2 hours 6 minutes 25 seconds. Lidiya Grigoryeva of Russia took the women’s race in 2:27:17. For the average runners, the ones who stayed on the course for four hours or more, their faces red with heat and exertion, simply crossing the finish line was victory enough.

   Chicago Marathon sends 61 to hospitals (Chicago Sun-Times)
Of the 45,000 who registered for the Chicago marathon, 33,033 started the race. Dr. George Chiampas, medical director for the marathon, said there were 110 calls for medical transport during the race, including people transported to medical-aid tents along the race course. Of the 110, 61 runners were taken to hospitals.

Running in just his second marathon, Evans Cheruiyot won the 2008 Chicago Marathon in 2:06:27.
 
   American Desiree Davila's Patience Pays Off In Chicago Marathon (Chicago Tribune)
Desriee Davilla's time of 2:31:33 was good for a fifth place finish in the women's race at the 2008 Chicago Marathon. She was also the top female American finisher.

   Reneau top U.S. male finisher in Chicago Marathon (Chicago Tribune)
Jeff Reneau finished 10th in the 1968 Olympic marathon trials and 11th in the 1969 Boston Marathon. His son wrestled in high school and college but managed to express his father's genes by becoming the highest U.S. Finisher at the Chicago Marathon by placing 7th with a time of 2 hours and 16 minutes.

   Verizon Wireless Keeps Chicago Marathon Running (Market Watch)
Verizon Wireless has deployed a COW (Cell on Wheels) at the Chicago Marathon site to provide additional voice and high-speed data capacity for the tens of thousands of marathoners and fans expected to descend upon downtown Chicago to support their friends and family as they cross the finish line. The extra cell coverage will come in handy for the one million plus spectators and a spike of nearly 200 percent usage during the marathon.

Constantina Tomescu-Dita won't be playing her customary game of "catch me if you can" Sunday at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Eight weeks removed from her breakaway gold-medal run at Beijing, the 38-year-old Romanian says she'll try something different against a field that includes two-time defending champion Berhane Adere, of Ethiopia, and 2007 runner-up Adriana Pirtea, of Romania. She is going to stay with the pack.

More than 7,000 athletes will run in the the IMT Des Moines Marathon on Sunday. Fans following a particular athlete can find the runner's projected pace per mile to determine when and where he or she should reach certain points on the course.    Hyeon, Jyong-suk win Seoul Marathon. (Donga)
The sixth annual Hi-Seoul Marathon posted nearly 9,000 finishers with Sohn Hyeon winning the men’s division with a time of two hours, 37 minutes and 40 seconds while Lee Jeong-suk took the women’s division with a time of two hours, 53 minutes and 22 seconds.

   Volunteers Keep Dupont State Forest Marathon on Track (Blue Ridge Now)
Nearly 300 runners participate in the Dupont State Forest Marathon. The volunteers set the course up in a record time of just under four hours. Most of the 100 plus volunteers arrive at 4:30 am the morning of the race to get things started for the 300 runners.

   Hartford Marathon: Impressive race by Flamino (Journal Inquirer)
26-year-old Patrick Moulton of Providence, finished the Hartford Marathon in 2 hours 21 minutes and 48 seconds. He shook off second place finisher Jonas Buud, Sweden, near the eighth mile. Buud kept pushing from just off the pace and would finish a mere 14 seconds off the lead

   Moulton, Abrha Win Hartford Marathon (Hartford Courant)
Ethiopian Serkalem Abrha, ran away with the Harford Marathon women's race from the start. She covered the distance in 2 hours, 38 minutes and 37 seconds. Patrick Moulton, 26, of Providence won his first marathon at the Hartofrd Marathon, breaking away from Jonas Buud of Sweden in the 22nd mile on the Founders Bridge to win in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 48 seconds. Michael Hall of New Milford was third with a time of 2 hours 32 minutes and 24 seconds.

The Hawaii Ironman is not the only way to run a marathon on the island state. Hawaii is now home to five marathons. The newest is the Kauai Marathon which will be held on September 6, 2009. Honolulu will take place December 14 for the 35th anniversary. The longstanding Kilauea Volcano Marathon was discontinued after the last race this past July due to environmental concerns.

John Parks of International City Racing said that this years Long Beach Marathon was the largest marathon in 24 years. He believes that the numbers for next years 25th anniversary race will crush this years 18,000 participant mark and may even move the finish line to accommodate the expected larger numbers.

   Foreign Runners Dominate Melbourne Marathon (China Post)
Asnake Fekadu of Ethiopia won the men’s race and Mai Tagami of Japan the women’s event at the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday. Fekadu finished the men’s race in 2 hours, 17 minutes. Josphat Mwangi of Kenya, also the runner-up last year, was second, and Yared Mekonnen of Ethiopia third. Tagami won the women’s race in 2 hours and 38 minutes.
