H. from Glen Ellyn, IL (1/23/2007) "Southern Hospitality" (about: 2007) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Mississippi Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This was my 47th state and I used the opportunity to escape from Chicago's frigid weather and visit somewhere I had never been before. One thing I have learned during the 50-state quest is that there is ALWAYS something to see in the places one visits. While running the marathon is the reason for going there, what I primarily remember from these visits are the people I meet and the things I see. This may perhaps be the best "value" in a US marathon. For a low ($35) entry fee, you get a) same day packet pick-up, b) a long-sleeve t-shirt, c) pizza and other nice refreshments at the finish, d) well-stocked and enthusiastic aid stations and e) a VERY-well organized race. What you DON'T get are things I don't really need: a) bands every mile, b) chip timing to tell me the 1/10th of a second I completed it in (the finish time posted agreed with my watch), c) pacing teams and d) a lavish finishing medal (the one they provided was just fine). This year's weather was warm, but just as predicted on The Weather Channel's website, and so I dressed, paced, and hydrated, accordingly. THANK YOU for a job very well done to all concerned. Ps. for those that have never been to Jackson, there are some very good restaurants, several excellent museums and a driving tour of the Natchez Trace that shouldn't be missed.

M. from Lubbock, TX (1/18/2007) "Really pleasant course; very helpful volunteers" (about: 2007) 11-50 previous marathons COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This marathon is organized by a local running club and they do an exceptionally good job with the resources at hand. The course was well-marked, water and Gatorade appeared where promised, and volunteers cheered on runners. True: the course is isolated. But that simply gives runners a chance to meditate, to enjoy the feel of 26.2 miles of asphalt beneath their feet, and to appreciate the experience of breathing in clean, sea-level air. Also on the upside: one drives to the course, parks on the side of the road, and begins running. No buses, no shuttles, no crowding. As for Jackson and Clinton: my partner and I discovered a marvelous bakery (Broad Street) and wished we had had time to tour the Eudora Welty House.

The staff members were very accommodating, allowing me an early start as a walker. The aid stations were well stocked. The weather was warm this year... and no rain! The course was well marked... out and back. It was paved and well maintained. There weren't many spectators, but that was not a problem. The Natchez Trace was beautiful. Thanks to all for a good experience!

M. from Lubbock, TX (1/15/2007) "Very low key, but very good organization" (about: 2007) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Mississippi Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This has the feel of a club race - packet pick-up the morning of, no chips, not many runners, open course, $30 race fee, etc. It is very well organized, however, and a pleasant, peaceful place to do a long run. If you are trying for a fast time, this can produce it. Winds are mostly neutralized by the trees, and the terrain is rolling, but only very slightly. Another writer suggested there isn't anything to do in Jackson or Clinton - pretty true of Clinton, but Jackson, for a city of its size, abounds with opportunities (although, you'll not be informed of any from the race website). The race is what it is. For $30, one simply can't complain. Decent medal, very nice age-group and overall awards, pizza at the finish, water, sport drink, and Gu (I think there were three stations offering Gu, actually). If you're looking for a well-organized, low-key event (and the opportunity to check Mississippi off the list), this is an excellent choice.

K. from Arkansas (1/15/2007) "Still a Nice, Small Marathon" (about: 2007) 11-50 previous marathons \| 3 Mississippi Marathons COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 The weather for the previous two marathons was great. The only drawback for this year was the weather (heat and humidity). More than twenty degrees over the average temperature. It did not seem too bad the first half, but we could feel it later. At the start of the race, we were told to be careful. There are no hills on this course. Just a few swells. Gatorade and water every two miles was enough. A few stops offered bananas, gels, etc.

Scenic, easy (gently rolling hills), and has little traffic. I appreciated how quickly they gave out the awards, which were nice plaques. My thanks to volunteers, who worked hard to provide support.

More fluid stops are needed... maybe every mile! Nice, quiet run. Few spectators, but race officials were great about driving the course to keep up on each runners' status. Pretty course. Great location - easy to find. Prefer chip timing though.

The course is remote and isolated without anything to write home about it. You are on a two-lane highway in the country with boring, uninteresting scenery. Not a spectator to mention. Only some cows and roadkill along the course to break the monotony. Jackson and Clinton are nothing places without anything for a visitor to do or reason to come and visit. The course is flat but beware the winds. The event is well organized but has limited resources available. I have done low-key, small marathons that were still interesting. This was not. Only about 160 runners so it got very lonely out on the course with an open, straight road in front of you to make the task in front of you seem daunting and unending. Playing mind games to make the miles pass is essential. As bad as the area is, the people are very nice. It was a pleasure to find the people very nice and helpful. Sometimes it surprises me that the people who live in the worst places are the nicest and those who live in nice places are so nasty (England and France). The organizers were wonderful and seemed to be great people. If you need to get Mississippi done for your 50 states, this is the race to do it, but there is no other reason to go that I can think of.

Joe Ginn from Vicksburg Mississippi (1/2/2007) "Nice mixture of runners from across the country" (about: 2006) First Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Though I don't do the actual marathon (I take part in the 5K racewalk component), I enjoy mixing with the runners who come in literally from all parts of the globe. Last year I talked to someone from Idaho and enjoyed sharing local knowledge with her. The food that people brought last year was excellent - almost like a church-wide potluck that we do so well in the south.
