Race Details
Organized annually every Spring, the Queens Marathon is a looped course, which we fully use to our advantage to create an atmosphere where the Runner and the Spectator work together. Friends of Queens Distance, Dozens of the New York City Area Running Clubs and the general public take a patch of the course and support participants throughout the course of the event.

COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 This is basically a race for local runners run by the Queens Distance Runners. Excellent group run by wonderful people. Unfortunately, this race is the epitome of the lonely long-distance runner due to the lack of overall runners you are basically out there on your own. It is a small group of Half marathoners (80) and Full Marathoners (40) running a 2 or 4 loop race around Flushing Meadow Park. Unfortunately, this race suffered due to the Covid Pandemic. In 2019 pre-Pandemic it was a wonderful 6 loop course around the upper regions of Flushing Meadow Park (Unisphere area) with great support, post-race food and swag. I have run all version of this race that date back to 2016 and the few different course changes, the 2016 & 2019 were by far the best versions. The pandemic basically killed this race. In 2020 the course was changed to a 4-loop course that goes around Meadow Lake then the pandemic hit and the race was postponed to smaller versions and multiple versions in late 2020 and 2021. If you have ever run in Flushing Meadow Park you are aware of the water puddles and mud that accumulates around the lake after any type of rain fall, no matter how you try to sweep the water to the side it does not really help. It really takes a lot of mental fortitude to run the last 2 loops of this race after most of the Half Marathoners are finished. For the cost associated it is best to join the Queens Distance Runners group and receive the early bird special of $26.20 to run the race other wise the listed price is not worth it. The course is not the best and quite lonely. The swag is a basic t-shirt that is different colors for the Half and the Full to distinguish the difference and the finishers medal while quite nice that showcases the borough of Queens, it was the prior years medal as the new shipment has not arrived. The course support was the main bright spot as group members were out at the 2 water stations on the course and guiding runners around the course. Great support by the gentleman by the Queens Zoo turnaround. After the race there was just water no other food support, a few healthy snacks from Costco wouldn't hurt as there is only a vendor in the park as you make your way to the subway entrance. The sad fact about this race is that another larger for-profit organization (NYCRUNS) ran a half marathon the very next day in the same park area using a 3-loop course. It would be great if organization got together and worked together for the benefit of the runners. There seems to be many races in Flushing Meadow Park monthly by many different groups that might runners with too many choices and the same courses. If the 2 organizations combined the races using the 3-loop course, there might be more participants. There was even a Brooklyn Marathon (NYCRUNS) April 24 - 2 weeks after the Queens Marathon. It would have been special to have a special medal or award for those who did both race (I might have been the only 1 to be brave or crazy enough to have done both) The Fall 2022 will probably the same version of this race (I will be there), hopefully by 2023 the borough of Queens can be showcased as it should be the worlds borough. |
