February in Florida - ideal for a winter runcation (4/23/19)

Please join us for the 2ND ANNUAL ST. PETERSBURG DISTANCE CLASSIC. With a marathon, halfathon, 10K, and 5K Race / Walk, we invite athletes of all abilities to these gorgeous courses on Florida's westcoast most beautiful waterfront. All races start before sunrise, adding to the natural beauty overlooking Tampa Bay. All courses are accurately measured and USATF certified, which means our marathon course is a Boston Qualifier. In our first year, about 5% of our finishers ran qualifying times.

For our friends up north, "February in Florida" can't be beat for a winter vacay, especially in St. Petersburg with its abundance of museums, galleries, and nightlife. St. Petersburg is just minutes from some of the finest beaches in the world.

As a local race director with 20+ years experience and the only race director to ever create a full marathon in Pinellas County, I am honored to showcase my city of 30 years. The St. Petersburg Distance Classic features the best race courses I have ever created. They include a tour of our exclusive waterfront residential areas, our downtown waterfront, our dynamic and diverse downtown, along with mileage on the secluded, mostly-flat Pinellas Trail - a crown jewel popular with local endurance athletes.

But don't just take my word for it. Here are some runner reviews:

"What a satisfying experience! The highlights: the stunning sunrise at Coffee Pot Bayou, Central Avenue totally taken by runners, the massive Pinellas Trail challenge with two big overpasses and moments of solitude that required mental strength, seeing all the leaders of the 5K, 10K, Half and Marathon. All stressing the jewel that city is. Plenty of aid stations with awesome volunteers, all corners closed by a battalion of police officers, easy to follow course, superb design of medals and shirts." - Marcia Sussman

"I loved the half marathon course! It was a great tour of my home!" - Carolyn Kiper

"I especially liked the way the 10K, half and marathon ran together with first the 10K splitting off and then the half and marathon going in opposite directions on the Pinellas Trail. Definitely a must do for anyone on the fence for next year." - Jim Baker

"I loved everything about this race. The course views along the St. Pete waterfront were spectacular! Congrats and thanks for staging another fabulous event." - Kurt Gleeson

"The best 10k we have ever done. The course was so interesting and so much to see. Perfect course, perfect weather and we loved it." - Peggy and Rob Dlugozima

"This race was awesome!!!!" - Regina Krauss Goolsby

"Very well-organized and executed race today! Easy to follow course, plenty of water stops, nice start/finish area and a good place for post-race activities, including awards. Well done...Thanks!" - Gary Saxton

"Thanks so much for putting this race together. What an extraordinary course! I can't wait to come back next year and bring some friends with me." - Sarah Donovan

"My favorite half marathon course! Fantastic race and bad ass medal. You and Rya outdid yourselves once again. Thank you for putting on the best races!" - Mitzy Ake

"Beautiful course and very well-organized from packet pick-up to post-race celebration. The volunteers and law enforcement were nice and helpful. I even encountered several friendly locals as I walked back to my car who didn't hesitate to say congratulations when they saw my medal. It's always a top-notch experience to be part of one of your races and I look forward to running in another one soon." - Lisa Kagan

"It was by far my favorite race!! Amazing job as always!!!! - Lauren Deni-King

"Good marathon but room for improvement." (about: 2023)

This is a good race in general, but the marathon is very small and it is definitely not a grand event as the emails or website portray. I liked the out and back course. Weather was extremely windy & cool on race day 2023 so it wasn't a beach weekend as hoped. There is no expo, just a bib pickup which was quick however, there were no signs, balloons or music leading you to it. There was only one race shirt with all races listed, instead of individual shirts for specific races. The course was nice but it was boring since there was no music. The volunteers were wonderful though! At the marathon turn around point, there was no timing mat or volunteer taking notes to record if a runner actually ran to the turn around; this allows for cheating on the course. The fluid stations started out stocked but after the turn around point in the marathon, the stations ran out of both Cups and Gatorade! Luckily in this marathon, I decided to carry my own bottle to refill but I have never experienced a marathon running out of cups. This was unacceptable for us marathoners and definitely reflects poorly on the race directors for not being prepared. Also, I would have liked to see course markers or a volunteer when the trail ended. Fortunately, a runner was ahead of me and showed me the way. Also, heard that the finish line clock went out which was unacceptable to those finishing at that point. However, the finish line woman announcer was spectacular. I appreciated the special marathon lanyard for the medal but didn't care for the dangling part at the bottom of the medal. The medal itself is the 'dangling' part so the extra attachment was gaudy and I don't believe it was an appropriate unisex finisher's medal. I loved the cold Diet Coke at the finish! Unfortunately, the pastries were Very stale. Didn't want the pasta meal but would have loved fresh bread, fresh bagels or salty snacks instead. There is room for improvement with this marathon.

St. Pete is a city that has really been revitalized in the past 15 years. As such, this race does a great job of showcasing the city, as well as the award winning Pinellas rail to trail which is where you run the majority of the 2nd half of the marathon. The race is very well organized, and the director and his wife work tirelessly to ensure every athlete has a great racing experience, regardless of the distance run. There are good hotels to stay at near the race start and finish line, and there is also ample parking. The weather this year was perfect, which really helps when you are running a marathon, and the after party was also well above average, with hot pasta and free beer.

The race was well-organized, with a spacious start line and plenty of facilities. The course is beautiful, with a combination of coastal running and time on a mixed-use trail. The water stops were plentiful, and the post-race food and swag was good.

YES, I am pleased and proud to be THE first to comment here on the 2020 run. ST. Pete is a beautiful city and this course starts and ends right alone the ocean and then through a beautiful neighborhood area before lots of miles on a flat out but verrry flat and shaded and no congestion with plenty of aid stations, before returning to a beautiful down town.

Most impressive to me and this was my 176 marathon run - was the personal attention by Rya - race director's wife - who was verry helpful and attentive to me during the registration process, took time to chat and pix with me at 5am and then again, willing to spend time to hear my stories after the race; then add her daughter Lea who accepted my stupid mistake of losing my bib within the first 10 minutes 'no problem' and issuing me another...then to cross and find that the post race party, with great music, pasta and free flowing Mch Ultra alll made for a great day. the medal and T are also verry nice...Thank you RYA - see you next year!
