"Far Too Dangerous! Stay Away!" (about: 2023)

COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 1 While the first half is breathtakingly gorgeous (probably the most beautiful course I have ever done), the second half is a NIGHTMARE! Running on a very uneven, NON-EXISTENT shoulder facing 55+ mph traffic and no one moves over. I had to jump out of the road twice to avoid being killed. Literally I almost lost my life to a truck towing 4 wheelers and a sedan that had a vehicle coming the other direction. I was so stressed and petrified, I was almost in tears. I have run over 50 marathons and this is the only one I would ever say is UNSAFE TO RUN. This race is an absolute NO GO unless they change the second half of the course. FAAAAAR TOO DANGEROUS. Seriously someone is going to die on this course. If you need UT, find another race.

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This has got to be one of the most beautiful courses I have run. A great way to get Utah on my 50-state quest and at a very reasonable cost. Spectators were few and far between, but the scenery more than made up for it. The course is largely downhill with an occasional roller. Watch out for the long, slow uphill after mile 23 - not as steep as Heartbreak Hill in Boston, but still tough. I never saw a mile marker after we turned onto that hill, which made it especially challenging. Volunteers were awesome! There is a local airport, but better connections through Las Vegas, which is less than 2 hours away.

"Scenic & Well Organized" (about: 2022)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I appreciate the organization of the event (as a former marathon director). The scenery was beautiful and the only part of the course I didn't care for was along a busier road shoulder as you got into town (after the lesser traveled roads and before the neighborhoods). It was really only a few miles of that, so no big deal. Some big downhills in miles 3-5 and around 6-7, be careful not to run hard and trash your legs. I saw some runners stopping & stretching later because they did that. I passed them later after they passed me on the downhills. Cold at the start but sunny so warmed up- do layers that you can throw out. This was the largest number of finishers so I think organizers are going to have to figure out better means to have runners stay warm after they are bused to the starting area (there was one fire and a couple of propane heaters). Bag check was fine. Friendly runners, AWESOME volunteers and aid stations. Medal is large (okay, but I'm fine with one that is smaller). Shirt was a basic T, brand runs small (I would change this if it were up to me). Great way to get Utah done if you're doing states. Lots of supportive people as you get into town, which was a pleasant surprise! We did a side trip to Zion Nat Park, highly recommended! I do recommend this race. This was my 46th marathon or longer race.

"Gorgeous Run" (about: 2019)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Sun Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 1 At the start line, it was freezing and only two small fires to keep us warm. Four Port-o-Potties so the line was like 30 minutes long, while you're freezing. Starting in the dark is tough to see potholes. Aid stations every 2 miles which isn't bad since it wasn't a hot marathon. Loved the views of the gorgeous red rock formations, streams, and the reservoir. The medal sucked. Race Tshirt was basic. Ice Cream sandwich at the finish was a cool. Met a few nice runners. Pacers were encouraging. All in all, the best part was the scenery. Signed up for this race last minute because the Death Valley Marathon had a possibility of being cancelled due tot he Government shutdown. Will probably not run this race again. |
