"Great small town race" (about: 2017)

I've ran the full here twice. The race consists of going counter-clockwise around the lake once, and then heading back clockwise. The half consists of just going clockwise around the lake. The course itself a bit hilly, with 450ft of elevation gain and the same in loss. The weather, although random, seems to always be very good for running. Right in that 45-50F neighborhood.

I think it's a very nice small town race. If you're fairly fast, you could actually place quite high. There are some fans along the course, but it's not a lot. Aside from the start/turn around/finish area, you'll get the random people standing at the end of their driveway. There are some, but it's not prolific.

One gripe that I have about 2017 in particular is that some of the refreshment tables seemed a bit disorganized. Coming up to one in particular I couldn't tell who had powerade and who had water until I was practically on top of them. Another thing I noticed is it seemed one of the refreshment locations possibly went home early? It's an out and back course essentially, and when I came rolling through mile 21 or so, there wasn't an aid station. It just seemed on the tail end of the course between miles 16 on that it could use more aid stations.

All-in-all, it's a good course with good weather. It is scenic, with a lake almost always through the trees at your side. I'm glad that they put it on and I wish them continued success.

"Beautiful small town race" (about: 2016)

The 1/2 is a 21 year old race. They seemlessly added a full two years ago. I ran the half this year as a training run for the upcoming Chicago marathon. I've also run it a couple of times in the past. I will run the full in the future as my schedule allows.

The loop course starts and finishes at the public beach in Detroit Lakes in west central MN. It is headquartered in a refurbished historic pavilion which sits on the east end of the beach in a treed city park. It is a great venue in a cool small town.

The courses go around Detroit Lake. It is a little hillier than you might imagine, in a good way. It is a forested course with a lot of lake views. It is run mostly on new blacktop so the surface doesn't beat you up.

It is extremely well organized by Mark Knutson who also directs, among other races, the acclaimed Fargo Marathon.

It is named after Detroit Lakes native and former 2:08 marathoner Dick Beardsley, who also delivers a impacting address at the pasta feed the night before. In addition to being a great finish line announcer, Pro coach GP Pearlberg gives an inspiring prerace address as well. The pasta feed is awesome with a wide selection of really, really good food.

This race has a great vibe. If you want to run a beautiful September race in a beautiful part of the country, run this race.
