S. from KC, MO (9/28/2020) "Glad to be able to run in this COVID Environment" (about: 2020) 4-5 previous marathons \| 3 Heartland Marathons COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 With all of the uncertainty in this COVID environment, I applaud the Omaha Running Club and the Heartland Marathon Committee for putting on a great AND safe event for the runners and spectators. Once again, 'lightning struck' but this time it only caused a 20 minute delay. To 'BB from PA' who made comments on 2019, the 2019 event was called off due to several lightning strikes while runners were on the course. Additional lightning strikes were showing on radar. They made the correct call for the safety of everyone then as well. Hands down the best of the 3 marathons in Omaha. Accurate course, good communication, nice medals, food, instant results posted live during race and most of all the safety of runners and volunteers taken into account. This year was a 2 loop course. The volunteers were awesome at aid stations. So much better than the HITS Omaha Marathon. Sign up for for this event and support the LOCAL ALL-volunteer organization!!

B. from Pittsburgh,Pa (9/22/2019) "Puzzling" (about: 2019) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Heartland Marathon COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 The race was black flagged 30 minutes after the full marathon and 15 minutes after the half marathon started. Why? I'm not sure as 8 hours later this has been no email from the organizer and only a brief statement noting "unfortunate weather conditions" on their website and Facebook page. The unfortunate weather...rain! No lightning and temperatures in w mid 50's!! In fact within an hour of the cancellation the rain stopped and the conditions became ideal for a marathon. At the start line the MC bragged that runners came from 30 plus states to run the race. I was one of them. So for a total of roughly $1000, I got 7 miles of race support, two cups of water and a very expensive, albeit nice, tech shirt! My advice to anyone looking for a race in Nebraska who is from out of state, run any other race. My advice to the race organizer, if you need ideal conditions to stage your race, disband!!! I suppose that every runner on the course has trained in far worse conditions than we ran in today!

S. from Los Angeles, CA (9/23/2018) "Well run, scenic course" (about: 2018) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Heartland Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 Although, it is a small race (just over 100 running the marathon, +half, relay, and 10k), it was extremely well organized.. The race starts next to the Missouri River and there we hit some hills running through Omaha before hitting the flats of a lot of parkland in Iowa. Indeed 21 miles are in Iowa. Frequent water/Gatorade stops were welcome. It was a good choice for me in my 50 state quest.

G. from WI (9/28/2017) "Great race in Nebraska" (about: 2017) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Heartland Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I had an enjoyable time in Omaha, the weather was extremely warm, but the race was very accommodating with ice and sponges. A good portion of the race was held on a paved trail with no automobile access. There was a lot of bike support in these sections and I never felt like I was alone. Great volunteers and race management made for an excellent experience. Omaha has a great Old Market area with delicious food and entertainment. I stayed at the Hilton which was walking distance to the race and downtown area. A great race to check off Nebraska if you are doing the 50 states.

T. from Lincoln, Nebraska (9/25/2017) "Very well-run marathon" (about: 2017) 6-10 previous marathons \| 1 Heartland Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This is a smaller marathon but should not be overlooked. At 82 degrees it was incredibly hot and the volunteers did a fantastic job of taking care of runners, some even biking to water stations to bring back water. Even though it was a somewhat lonely course due to the location, I never felt alone because I was always being checked up on, especially toward the end of the race. Very well-marked course and well-prepared water stations. I highly recommend this marathon!
j. e. from Pennsylvania (9/25/2017) "fairly flat, super organized" (about: 2017) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Heartland Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Pros: navigationally easy from airport, to hotel to expo and start. If you stay downtown, you can get a courtesy airport shuttle and walk to everything. The expo was small but had the essentials. The shirt is drifit, gender specific and decent quality. Bart Yasso did an informal round table question and answer session early then a formal lecture at 4pm. they had a complimentary pasta dinner, which was excellent. I was pleased with how friendly and helpful everyone was. It was apparent that the race was organized by runners, as no detail was forgotten. The course was nice. I gave it 4 stars because I don't like running on concrete and a large portion was concrete (personal preference). There is minimal shade so wear a hat/sunglasses/sunscreen. We were 'blessed' with heat and humidity and full on sun. It was brutal. There were aid stations every 2 miles. I carried water, as this wouldn't have been frequent enough for me on such a hot day. The stations had gels (at least 2 of them), ice and sponges. The volunteers were cheerful and helpful, filling our bottles or whatever we needed. They had people on bikes to secure our safety also during the duration of the run. The hills were in the initial 3 miles or so, and some were significant, so I walked them in the heat. The remaining 23 miles were flat. I loved crossing the pedestrian bridge from Iowa to Nebraska the last 1.2 miles. You had expansive views of Omaha and better yet...of the finish line. I enjoyed the Old District of Omaha, full of eclectic shops, cafes and host to a wonderful strawberry margarita. It was worth the walk. The medals were colorful and the age group awards were a bottlecap bottleopener with the logo of the marathon on it. The volunteers were making sure we were all okay postrun, doing what they could for our comfort and safety. There were plenty of snacks postrun. Cons: not a fan of heat but RD can't control that. If he could, it would have been 35 degrees cooler. I am also not a huge fan of concrete, but it was nice to not have to navigate traffic and you were protected on the well marked bike trail we ran on. Definitely a nice race. I was pleased with all that I got for the entry fee. The pasta dinner with lecture was so awesome. I always enjoy the races that have that...it's always the small races that do that for the runners. NYC and Boston aren't giving you all that. So hats off to the RD and all the volunteers for all that you did for us, especially on a brutally hot day. We cannot achieve our goals without you. You are the ones standing out there in the heat (or cold), giving your support and gatorade to us sometimes long after we have crossed the finish line. You made the race and all the events easy for the out of towner.
Jeff Newcorn from IL (10/3/2016) "Really Nice Option if you dig Omaha" (about: 2016) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Heartland Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is the 2nd running of this race. Really nicely produced, and they thought of everything- and I am a stickler for details, from # of porta potties to the strength of the sports drink. Lots of water stations. Few fans, but the ones there were vocal. The expo was small but good. A HUGE surprise was that FRANK SHORTER was there to meet people. I got to have a nice chat with one of my true heroes, and he signed my bib!!
