"Good small trail marathon" (about: 2018)

Good small 90% single track trail marathon. 1st 5 miles goes to the lake, 16 miles around the lake and then return back on the same 1st 5 miles to finish. Well organized and plenty of water stations. What fans there were, were enthusiastic. 2nd time running the race and probably do it a again.

"Small field of competitors on a scenic course." (about: 2016)

If you're looking for a franchised trail marathon complete with swag bag, post race party, all the tastiest of foods at aid stations, and a high ticket price, then move along. However, if you're looking for a largely solitary and pleasant running or training experience with friendly volunteers, a well-marked course, food at aid stations that you likely have at home and use, easy and free parking, and a stupidly cheap entry fee (35$), you should give this one a shot.

I ran this marathon in 2016, and here are some general thoughts:
1) The field of competitors is capped by the organizers at 300, and this number includes runners in the marathon as well as the 10 mile option. 40 people got official finish times for the marathon, and 100 people got official finish times for the 10 miler. What this meant for me is that for all but about 1/2 mile total, I ran alone and encountered people only at the aid stations or as I passed them towards the end of the course. I like solitude, and hence I very much enjoyed the overall racing experience.
2) I wouldn't say there are 'hills' on the course, but there are some gradual inclines and declines, and the 2 miles or so are a slow and steady climb back the way you came. The whole course was decidedly runnable (even for a schlomo like me) and much of it followed two adjoining lakes/ponds, thereby making the run very scenic and peaceful. I tend to become absent minded when I run, but even I didn't miss any turns due to the very careful and visible course markings.
3) Volunteers and spectators are less in number than you'd see at bigger races, due to the smaller field size. The volunteers were nice and filled my water bottles for me, and were very diligent about their primary task, which was to write down my bib # to confirm I'd passed through the aid stations.
4) Parking/packet pickup was free and easy. You park in the high school lot about 50 yards away from the start line/packet pickup area.

I enjoyed the course - first at this distance on a trail. Sort of a big loop/single track around the lake system with support places at key locations eager to serve the runners. Last section is a gradual uphill for several miles - a great challenge I was ready for and where you can pick folks off who went out too fast or did not train with enough hills. Maps with elevation on race site. Good time of year to run as well. Spectators? Nature takes care of that.
