"Overall not impressed" (about: 2017)

2 previous marathons | 1 Sao Paulo International Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

Course:
1. Two tunnels with decent amount of climbing at the end of the route is just brutal. Otherwise it's relatively flat.
2. Nothing special except for the start/end being in the beautiful Ibirapuera Park. The rest of the route is not scenic at all, neither does it pass by iconic Sao Paulo sites.

Organization:
1. Abundant water stations along the route, as well as med personnels at the latter part of the race.
2. No pacer group, almost no corrals at start line. (There are different zones but seems people just don't care).
3.Long line for packet pick up. Expo and Finish line area are OK.
4. Nice running shirt but medal is a little bit meh.
5. To be honest, for what I paid (40USD), this is a value for the bucks

Spectators:
Enthusiastic spectators around starting/finishing area, and there are also some along the route though definitely much more scattered.

"Good, but RIO is better" (about: 2011)

It is ok and well organized, but the course is a little bit boring. If you can choose, go to Rio Marathon.

"Harder than NYC ?" (about: 2009)

2 previous marathons | 1 Sao Paulo International Marathon

I wondering if Sao Paulo is harder than the NYC marathon. I ran SP back in 09. Unfortunately developed plantar fasciitis during the training program but managed to finish the race in 04:30hrs. I've found pretty hard especially the two tunnels after mile 15. The temperature didn't help as well (85f). I'm registered for 2011 NYC. I will share my comments afterwards.

"Not the International Marathon of Choice" (about: 2010)

Lots of people! This was a big race with pretty good crowds. The course was a bit hilly and the 5 traffic tunnels are not enjoyable: Downhill going in, no moving air in the middle, and uphill coming out. There are two large/long tunnels right at the end.

Side note: if you are 4-hour marathoner or longer, this race isn't for you. I ran a 3:45, and by the time I was getting to the water stations, they were running out. I was glad to see the water was not tap water and came packaged to eliminate stomach issues. Furthermore, there were only 2 Gatorade stations, with 1 guy filling cups with hundreds of people running by, and the second station was all but out when I got there.

Nevertheless, it was a good experience to run in another country! Come prepared.

"SP Marathon Needs to get Professional" (about: 2010)

3 previous marathons | 1 Sao Paulo International Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I enjoyed this race but the organizers need to get more professional if they want to be considered an international marathon. This is the best in Brazil but it could be much better.

They need to start the marathon much earlier - 9 a.m. in 75-degree weather is too hot to run. The race becomes all about money because TV Globo is the sponsor. Most runners finish take three hours or more. Imagine running at high noon at mile 18. There are many water stops but the Gatorade stops are slow to refill. That seems to be a problem in every race in Brazil. The course is a bit boring, but there is some live music during the first 10 miles. Crowds are good for several miles but then fade out because it is too hot to be in the sun. The finish is nice but it is on an uphill slant. The after-race food pack was awful! I got an apple, Gatorade, and a granola bar. At least put the medal on me when I arrive at the finish! Damn, I just ran 26.2 miles!

"Well organized" (about: 2009)

6-10 previous marathons | 2 Sao Paulo International Marathons

Well organized marathon in Brazil. The course is a bit hilly and it has a few tunnels under the river. The water stations are ok but nothing compared to the stations in the US marathons that I've run.

"Boring Course" (about: 2009)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Sao Paulo International Marathon

Very tough. Lots of hills and tunnels, and a very hard 3K uphill at the 38th kilometter Winter weather helps getting to the finish line, but the tunnels cost much time. Boring track. Not a race at which to set your own record. The last kilometer, at the Ibirapuera Park, is the best part of the race!

"My first hometown marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon ever, and I really loved it. I was very pleased to run in the streets of my hometown, although there are no particular landmarks to see in São Paulo.

The crowd was great; very supportive and very good humored!

I will probably do it again next year !
