G. from Calhoun, LA (11/12/2014) "Fun Race with great support" (about: 2014) 2 previous marathons \| 1 Dirty South Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I really enjoyed the inaugural Dirty South Marathon. The aid stations were great: water and gatorade were always COLD which helped. Lots of stations had fruit ready with really supportive aid station volunteers. There were some people in their yards cheering runner through out the course as well. I only gave 3 stars for spectators because it would have been ice for a few more (given more years of this race, I'm sure spectators support will grow). Since we are in West Monroe, LA, there was even a duck call start by Willie Robertson. The course had a few more hills on the 2nd half that I planned for, next year I will work in a little more hill training. I plan on running the race again next year! I hope this race will continue to grow to a great regional event.

M. from Little Rock, Arkansas (10/17/2014) "Solid inaugural race" (about: 2014) 1 previous marathon \| 1 Dirty South Marathon COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This was the inaugural Dirty South Marathon and this was the first marathon I've ran. The best part of the marathon was the enthusiasm of the organizers and the volunteers. I didn't expect so many aid and water stations and the enthusiasm of the volunteers. They all seemed enthusiastic about the area's first marathon. Also, there were an abundance of police officers to direct traffic. The only two negatives, there was a beer trailer at the end of the race, but I didn't know about it! A little more communication about what the post-race offerings would improve the race. Also, the last five to six miles of the course there wasn't a shoulder on the road and there was traffic going both ways at times. So, there was some traffic dodging going on that no one really expected. Great medal and long sleeve tech-shirt for runners. The organizers are really looking for feedback through surveys and social media, so I feel like this race will only improve with time and experience.

(about: 2014) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Dirty South Marathon COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I took a chance on an inaugural marathon when I saw the involvement of a local running club and when I saw it was partnered with my favorite charity, St Jude. Overall, this was a good first effort with great communication from the race director. I have provided the team with some recommendations, and they have noted their intention to address them next year ... so I expect a good event to improve significantly as a result of lessons learned this year. As a newer race in a small town, it is relatively small (just over 100 marathoners) through a pretty town, nice residential areas, and a lovely (but hilly) park. Pros: +Committed race director and team ... great comms through their FB page +Southern hospitality ... lots of verve and encouragement from the fabulous volunteers +Extra water stations and ICE COLD liquids at all aid stations because of extremely high humidity: shows the team was prepared for adverse conditions +Lots of police officers at intersections to ensure safe passage +Very nice medal, shirt, and there was a VEGAN tent offering food options at the finish line, which is a first seen for me ... Cons: + Having run quite a few marathons in the past, I thought the price of this one was a bit high. +Course advertised as flat and fast; that is only true of the half. The second half of the full is rolling hills I was not expecting. Coupled with the humidity, it was a hard slog as I sure had not banked any energy for the extra effort. + The roads were closed for the half, but not for the second half of the full. We ran a few stretches on busy roads with no shoulder ... I feared being hit by a car. Many runners brought this to the attention of the team; I expect this will be resolved for next year because it was a very obvious safety issue. + A little hard to get to this race if you aren't a local; that said, it's a neat place, and folks are nice. It's the home of Duck Commanders if you're into that sort of thing. I had no idea, so being a vegan in a Prius rental car ensured I did not really blend. But as said, people are really nice even if they think you are a bit odd. :) Again, a great first effort ... I have no doubt this one will get better and more popular going forward!
