"Awesome Oz medal, few but phenomenal spectators" (about: 2016)

I flew into Kansas city and rented a car. It's a 1:40 drive to Wamego (thanks to 75 mph speed limit). RD sent out emails esp towards end that were informative. Everything from packet pickup to hotels, parking were easy. Its a small race, which I loved. Race started 20 min late due to shuttle issues...that was a problem because I had tight schedule, but RD let us start 10 min late if we wanted. They need to figure that one out. Course: it was raining so sucked because I was soaked the entire race and chaffed and blistered. Rolling hills, not that scenic. Aid every 2 miles and few spectators but they were inspirational. Medal was so colorful and Oz themed. Shirt gender specific and goodie bag had poster, headband & sticker, all nice additions. It was a small organized fun race. I couldn't wait for it to be done due to the wet soggy clothes and tight schedule, all not RD fault. They had a tent for us at start which was a nice gesture in the rain. Bring your own gels, as they don't provide them. They have candy, fruit, power bars on the course. Thanks to the volunteers who endured the rain the first 1.5 hours. I think I was deflated mentally from the rain and that made this race not a favorite for me...again nothing to do with the RD. Anything, aside from the late start that the RD and volunteers were involved with was phenomenal. The woman at packet pickup the morning of race was so kind...thank you. Wamego is a small town that really welcomed the runners. Not all towns and cities do that. So thank you Wamego. The roads were open to traffic but that was not an issue, as there were few cars that were all conscientious of the runners.

"Awesome small-town race" (about: 2015)

This was a really enjoyable race with a friendly small-town feel to it. There were under 100 runners in the marathon plus a few hundred in the half. There was a much more hands-on feel compared to a huge race - the race directors were in frequent contact and made the organization very clear. My biggest reason for signing up (aside from visiting friends in the area earlier that week) was the awesome medal. The course was pretty nice - gently rolling hills, mostly on asphalt, clearly marked and staffed with volunteers telling you where to turn. Aside from the volunteers there weren't many spectators, but the volunteers were all super enthusiastic and motivating. I ran alone the first hour or so, and then joined up with the 4:30 pace group which was nice. All aid stations were stocked with Gatorade and there was one every 1-2 miles, which worked out perfectly. I had to take off right after the race but maybe next year I'll stay and look around the Oz museum.

"Great Small Race!" (about: 2015)

Great little marathon with very friendly people, super course support and a fun theme (Wizard of Oz). HIDDEN GEM: Victory Inn B&B a few blocks from the finish! Wamego is such a warm & friendly little town with really cool things to see like the Oz Museum. Lot of rolling hills, a little traffic, no spectators, but tons of volunteers & police on the course to keep you safe. We love the smaller races & this one is the best we've done yet!

"Be prepared to be alone most of the race" (about: 2014)

This race has potential...local businesses weren't aware of the race, neither was the local police or the hotel that was recommended on the website! Packet pick up was unclear as nothing was set out (we got there on Fri afternoon) and volunteer there didn't know where the packets were. The course is fairly consistent with some rolling hills. Not much to look at but ok if you like to zone out like me. Very, very small race with open roads. There were a few dangerous spots as no one knew about the race and speeding vehicles. Very few spectators but if you have family/friends who are tracking you, very easy for them to find you. Volunteers are friendly and enough for the number of participants. Nice weather, a bit windy, especially on the open road. Decent food at the end, not too much variety. Best part was the mini massage. My massage therapist was great! I would say probably one of the best I've had. Local businesses were very accommodating. The Oz winery was great. Very knowledgable staff and nice wine. I would recommend the race organizers to communicate with the local businesses and help them generate sale and create more interest for the visitors while they're there.

"Out & back rolling hills on county roads" (about: 2014)

Fun little race in a small town. It was Wizard of Oz theme. Very cool to dress up. Staff and directors were fun & VERY organized. TONS of food at the end of the race. Also a massage tent! Very very nice for a small race! There were porta potties and water stops every 2 miles. I was alone for the majority of the race. This is an open course/roads were not closed. It is easy for spectators to drive to various loactions on the course. It was an out & back course until mile 22ish. At mile 22, you start weaving through neighborhoods & the town. There were no signs or cones telling you were to turn. The only marking for turns was in white spray paint. I am not a very elite/competitive runner, and I still managed to take 3rd, so that was fun. Beware, you may be alone for most of the race, and it's not a super 'exciting' course. Not a lot of specators. I like running alone & can zone out easily, so this was a fun race for me :)
I would run again if it was closer to my home state. I would reccomend for people! It is USATF certificed, so my BQ will count.
