I love this low-key, informal marathon - small, stress-free, flat (mostly), and great for a BQ! The race is organized by people who run and know what you need in a marathon. There's not a lot of formality and there are very few spectators, but the directions are great (out-back-out-back), the water stop are excellent, packet pick-up is easy (you can get everything on race morning), and the after-party has good food and great music. If it's your first marathon, you might want to do one that is bigger and more of an event, but if you just want to race (and especially if a BQ is your goal), this is an excellent option.

Oh, and as others have noted - if you are a local and have the chance to do a few practice runs on the tow path, do it. I didn't and wasn't totally prepared for the differences between running on pavement and running on gravel.

"Great, small marathon" (about: 2014)

This is an excellent small marathon. The course is on the gravel C&O canal towpath. The path is in excellent shape, but you should prepare with a few long runs on trails. The course is very slightly up hill on the way out, maybe 80' over the 6.55 mile outbound leg. It isn't really noticeable. It is, psychologically, helpful on the inbound leg.

The volunteers and on course support is excellent. There was plenty of water, Gatorade, and Gue along the course. I picked up my number the day before at the Georgetown Running Company. The weather was excellent cool, overcast, and the occasional sprinkle of rain. I was expecting hot in humid, but got lucky.

The post race food was also very good. If you are looking for a well organized, low-key race, with the potential for a BQ this is it.

"Race put on by runners" (about: 2013)

The race is small and doesn't come will all of the flare of some of the larger races in the DC area, but it's clear it's put on by runners as opposed a larger company like North Face. It's efficiently run with the runners' experience as the focus. You can pick up your bib on the morning of the race, park at the start, and not have to worry about getting boxed in from the crowds early in the race.

"Fast!" (about: 2013)

This was my 5th marathon. I only choose flat courses because I'm always trying for a BQ. This was the fastest of the fast. No turns. Out and back twice. That sounds rough but actually I broke it up into 4 10ks mentally. I BQ'd and PR'd. No spectators. None. The course and the small marathon feel make up for that. It' doesn't even feel like a marathon. It's like your going out for your long run and happen to have a bib on.
