I was excited to try a night race and hopefully qualify for Boston one more time, however that was not to be. The weather was not too humid which was good luck because there was not much wind to cool you off if it was too hot. The gated community that it was held in was quite bare and not scenic, which made the five loop course even more painful. The first 2.5 loops were not terrible as there was still some light from the setting sun but when the sun went down it made the course more tricky. The lighting on the course was splotchy and there were some wooden bridges with planks to negotiate, which all together slowed you down because of unsure footing. They advertised a five hour time limit, however people were hounding me in a pick up truck before the 4 hour time limit when I was just about mile 25 asking me if I was okay to finish or if I needed a lift. They passed by me several times, which was very disconcerning since I was already not having a great race and they were not making me feel any better. The support along the course was splotchy as well but appreciated, it was more concentrated by the start/finish, which you passed four times so that was uplifting. The post-race food was merely okay, tons of boxes of pizza and water.

All in all for a first time race it was okay, there is much they could improve upon to make it more appealing. I will not be doing another night race but it certainly could have potential.

This race and the accompanying 10K seemed to be done mainly to draw attention to the gated community where it was held. In addition to the lighting issue, the marathoners seemed to be regarded as second-class runners While the 10K runners had an awards ceremony, the marathon runners received no awards. To add more insult, at 68, I was lumped in a 50+ age group. There were few enough runners that they could have recognized age-group winners as they came across the line (and could have put me in a ten-year group).

The weather actually wasn't too bad, starting in the mid 70s and dropping to 69. I imagine that would be the exception, coming maybe once every five or six years. So this race could be much tougher. Anyway, I've done a marathon in North Carolina now. I won't be back.

Lighting was poor, some lights went out and of course you could not take advantage of the running the least distance, A couple of the intersections did not have guides or signs. Also the folks passing out the GU's tore off the top and handed you a mess, not hygenic nor helpful, put a couple in
my pocket for later use causing sticky running shorts
