"Really fun race and perfect weather !!!" (about: 2017)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Indoor Insanity Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I ran this in 2017 and the course had been changed to only 52 half mile laps which I thought would get tedious but was actually a lot of fun. Laps were counted down instead of up which was much better. The course zig zagged left and right in the infield of the track making it both fun and less stressful on the knees. They had the a/c kicked down low and the music up high with 2 aid stations per lap. There were bleachers for family to sit on while they watched. It seems to be primarily a relay race but there were full marathoners as well and with all the runners zipping by all the time, it really kept everything fresh and exciting. Just a great time all the way around. I have run many marathons now and this is by far one of my favorites. I will be returning for sure.

The best things about the IIM include:

- energizing music

- completely flat and repetitive (84 times) course which lends itself to even pacing and steady running rhythm

- bathrooms and aid stations always a couple of running minutes away

- constant encouragement from volunteers, other runners and spectators

The only things which could be improved are:

- change lap distance to an even number (e.g., .5 miles) so split times are meaningful [note: I recall that lap distance is a little less than a third of a mile)

- lay carpet over the concrete section of the course to lessen the pounding on runner's legs [note: my estimate is that runners run about a total of 5 miles on the concrete section of the course over the 84+ laps]

I've run IIM twice and look forward to returning to run in 2017.

"Small indoor marathon" (about: 2015)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Indoor Insanity Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I traveled to North Carolina to run this marathon as part of my 50 states quest. This is my third indoor marathon, but was my least favorite of the three. If you need North Carolina and cannot get here in March or October to run one outside, then this would be an alternative.

Pros:
(1) Day of race packet pick-up
(2) Excellent postrace food including beer
(3) Plenty of parking and easy access for spectators
(4) Water stop and bathroom every 500 meters
(5) Free race photos and post race massages
Cons:
(1) Course was designed to be formula one style (you made 84.4 circuits). You always seemed to be turning and there was a concrete section each lap. Running the track oval would have been preferable.
(2) Approximately half of participants were relay runners so for solo runners we always felt we were getting in their way since they were going faster than we were and passing us regularly.
(3) Timing/lap counting was done by chip with person as back-up. Both systems failed in my case. Volunteer was counting for too many runners and missed me a couple of times. Chip failed to register properly a few times. It came done to me counting my laps.
(4) Pre-race communications was a bit lacking. Web site and Facebook page had information, but were not updated very often. Few or no emails from race director.

"Awesome race, great fun- thanks" (about: 2015)

If you want to do all 50 states, North Carolina is easiest on this well-organized indoor 500 meter track. Your family will root you on and see you at least 84 times! You can even wait until race morning for packet pickup and sign-up. It was fun and the volunteers were great. Thank you all!
