"Tiny race but very scenic and friendly" (about: 2015)

I came across this race only because I was doing the Hood to Coast relay in Oregon the week after and was looking for a marathon within driving distance to run on the same trip. Coming from Vancouver or anywhere south, the trip to Texada is time consuming but beautiful. There are three ferries, and it takes the better part of a day to get there, but the scenery on those ferry rides and the roads in between are amazing. I arrived late in the evening, and after emailing the race director asking if I could pick up my packet on race morning, he actually had someone from the hotel I was staying at bring my packet there to pick up when I checked in. When I got to the Texada Island Inn, not only was my packet waiting for me, but the person checking me in was also running the race and was very friendly and accommodating. The race itself is very hilly but scenic, and with only 16 marathoners on a very rural island, there were many points where I was alone on the course. The volunteers and spectators that were out there, however, were extremely enthusiastic and encouraging - seemed like whole island came out to support the race. I ended up finishing third overall at 4:11, something I would never dream of in any other race, and the support at the finish was extremely friendly as was the whole race experience. If you're looking for big crowds and a party atmosphere, this race isn't for you, but if you enjoy nice scenery and very friendly people, this is one to consider.

"friendly, tiny race; beautiful, challenging course" (about: 2013)

Texada was my 68th career marathon, and among the most challenging. The Race Director is a legend in the running community, and completed the marathon along with the rest of us (a total of 7 marathoners! Now that's unique!) TERRIFICALLY WELL ORGANIZED and marvelously friendly, especially relative to the size of the race. If I lived closer, I'd make this an annual event. Highly recommended. Also, what a gorgeous part of the world! A great excuse to get to this island!

"Tough - and Beautiful" (about: 2013)

The first half of the marathon is a climb of about 1000 feet on sometimes very primitive roads of dirt and gravel past open fields and through forest. The second half zigzags through the small town of Van Anda and then along the longest paved road on the island. There are numerous volunteers along the path, as well as arrows spray-painted on the ground to guide you. There are 11 stations along the path, and some volunteers cheering at the end. But, since there were only seven runners, I was utterly alone for 24 of the 26 miles. It was awesome, and I would recommend it to anyone that wasn't afraid of hills or concerned with getting a PB.
