Bare bones run (about: 2013)|

Wow, what to say about the Panhandle Marathon? Came to town to visit friends and run TX for the 50 states goal I am going after.
It's surprising that this marathon doesn't attract more runners, especially with the size of Lubbock. I doubt more than 200 runners showed up for the 7:30am marathon start this year.
First of all, smallest expo I have ever been to, which doesn't really matter. The start/finish line were still being set up the morning of the race and volunteers were pointing people in different directions for where the marathon start was located. Race finally started about 5 minutes late, no fanfare which is OK. As for the course, it is run around desolate, industrial, highway on/off ramps of Lubbock. Maybe this is all the town has to offer? Aid stations had water & Gatorade. Intersections were partially maintained. Wouldn't surprise me if someone got hit by a vehicle if they keep running this course...you run with some fast traffic! Campus is nice, but not much beyond that. Finally, the finish was OK. Finisher cotton shirt given out and a medal with no date.
What really was upsetting was the promises made/broken.
Promise: 'Greatest Post-Race Food' = A cup of water. No joke, there was no food at the end of the race.
Promise: 'All races started by the masked rider.' = Late start with guy with bullhorn.
Overall, minimal race that I would deem OK.
