"Fun Half and Full in a Tropical Climate!" (about: 2023)

1 previous marathon | 1 Placencia Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I ran the half in 2023 and had a blast!

The course goes down the beautiful Placencia peninsula. The full marathon starts and ends in Placencia Village. Shuttle busses take half marathon runners to the starting point at the north part of the peninsula.

The race starts early (5am) to beat the heat. The tropical climate can be a challenge. In 2023, it was about 80 degrees and 90% humidity at 6am. Fortunately there are plenty of hydration stations with water, powerade, and fruit. Some of the hydration stations go all out with costumes and music!

There is a nice mix of local Belizean runners and international tourists. Also a nice mix of serious and casual runners.

All participants receive a shirt and medal, and the top runners in each age group get trophies!

All in all: This is a great course in a beautiful location and a heck of a lot of fun!

"A small jewel of a race in a jewel of a place!" (about: 2016)

OK, so this December will be my 3rd time running this half. I am HOOKED! It is everything I love-small supportive field, lots of course support by locals and local businesses (each business sponsors a table/booth at every mile), flat course, and shots near the end! Chip and his crew do a wonderful job with packet pickup and after-race awards. I am now hooked and must vacation in Placencia every year so I can run this race. It was born in 2012 when the Mayans predicted the world would end, so originally it was called the End of the World Marathon. Belize has a huge Mayan cultural influence and Placencia is a low-key exotic vacation. Forget the cheesy megaresorts of other islands, Placencia is quietly beautiful. Oh, on the race course, Do not miss the mannequins/blow-up dolls that are dressed-up to resemble runners-LMFAO!!!! The only con is the garbage on the race course the day after-I go out and do what I can to pick up garbage. It's very important this jewel stay clean!

"Great small race in an ideal setting" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Placencia Marathon

This is a small race that is very well organized and executed. Placencia, Belize, is a small, off-the-beaten-path village in southern Belize, and the area did a wonderful job of supporting the race. The course is pancake flat. Volunteers handed out plenty of water and fruit throughout. The weather is warm, and the humidity is high. The medal and t-shirt were well done. Beyond the race, Placencia is a fun place to vacation. If you are looking for a destination race, you couldn't do better than this one.

"Fantastic event with great organization/support." (about: 2012)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Placencia Marathon

The inaugural Placencia Marathon was extremely well organized and supported. The course is entirely flat on an out-and-back, oceanfront road with the Caribbean ocean in full view the entire 26.2 miles. The race began at an early 5AM (to beat the heat). With water stops every mile, there was never a shortage of water or nutrition. Water was passed to athletes in 12oz plastic bags and fruit was abundant at every aid station. There were lonely, quiet parts to the race between aid stations, but local villagers came out to spectate with great enthusiasm.

The Placencia Marathon made it a priority to sponsor local runners for the event, as well as award prizes to local top finishers. This was a great stride forward to build the Belizean running community.

Overall, the event exceeded all my expectations. I was impressed. It was a beautiful setting and a fun well supported race with an abundance of volunteers. I highly recommend it.

"All that a small local marathon should be!" (about: 2012)

A flat, tropical, coastal run, the only hills being periodic speed bumps on the asphalt road course. Started in the dark at 5:15 a.m., but the folks in Placencia Village, Belize were sitting on their porches to cheer the runners on. Water stations every mile had ample water and fruit. What the crowds lacked in numbers, they made up for with enthusiasm.

Pre-race pasta dinner and post-race party with beer and local music were as well done as any of the big city marathons I have run (actually they were better in Placencia). The aid stations were better than most marathons I have run, coming every mile and being well-stocked.

This race brought joy to the runners (both half and full marathons) and the great volunteer support staff and the communities of the Placencia peninsula as well.

Would I run this 'End of the World Marathon' again? You Bet! (presuming that the world doesn't end on 21 Dec 2012)
