"Interesting fun marathon" (about: 2016)

This my second midnight run, and it was as much fun running in the dark as last time. I really hated having to do five laps of the same course, but the five mile loop was pretty well thought out. There were no big hills, and the intersections were controlled well by the local police. There were plenty of water stops. The temps were in the 70s but humidity was unreal (I'm from dry Colorado). Pizza at the end was great and the medal and shirt are exceptionally nice.

This was my first marathon and I was very nervous! The race directors, spectators, course, aid, and support crew were all exceptional. I could not have asked for a better first marathon experience. There was a tiny hill but it wasn't bad at all. The medal, t shirt and hat were all high quality. Only downfall was no GU or gels.

Well organized race with a flat, PR-type course. Unfortunately, it was nearly 80 degrees with crazy high humidity this year. Nevertheless, the 5-loop course makes it great for spectators and your 'pit crew'. If you get there a little early, you can park your car right next to the course, in the same parking lot as the start/finish line. This creates a NASCAR-like 'pit road' for runners. My wife and daughter just sat in the back of our van and handed me gels, etc. during the race. The volunteers are also amazing...handing out water/gatorade/ice cold towels. Sadly, because of the high humidity, this was my 2nd slowest marathon, but it's July in Tennessee, so I knew it was a possibility. Nevertheless, a great shirt, hat, medal, and experience. Proud to be a 'Loonie'!

"Small town event that's still growing" (about: 2015)

Overall well run for a 3rd year event. A repetitive loop course, so you gotta be able to tolerate that (I've done that before, though). Well marked course with flashing police road markers, and officers at major intersections. Rather impressive bling (embroidered cap, tech shirt, nice medal and custom bib).
Biggest concern as a veteran marathoner and physician is that in 82 degree heat and humidity (cooling to mid 70s), they only offered water and Gatorade on the course. Would really expect some more substantial carbs/salts in this day and age. They did run sprinklers and offer wet towels (iced!) on the last three loops. Grateful there weren't more runners cramping up/fatiguing than there seemed to be. GOOD amount of food at the end, but I think there should be more on the course.

"Fantastic Midnight Party" (about: 2014)

This was a great, well organized, well executed marathon. I was surprised at the entire night from packet pick up until the end of the marathon food. Well done by some truly dedicated volunteers and race directors. A very special shout out to the volunteers who stayed out the entire time in the rain to take care of the runners. This was one of the better small marathons and I will be back next year. Very nice race T-shirt, medal, and finishers hat. Great job!

What a fun time! My first midnight marathon and I'll be back. Mid 60s and light rain was perfect running weather for July. Wonderful organization and energetic volunteers stayed out all night to really make it a great morning of running! Who said nothing good ever happens on the street after 2AM?!

"A really special and fun race" (about: 2014)

What a great race. Great organization, some volunteers who must be loonier than the runners since they were out over 6 hours in the rain and one spectator who just went above and beyond. This race would have been perfect except for the water on the course, which was awful. I plan to run it again (note the 4 stars for the spectator is because of the police, the volunteers and a couple of people who cheered us on all night long).

"Tropical night marathon" (about: 2013)

50+ previous marathons | 1 Loonies Midnight Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Hot and humid night created real tropical conditions in this race. Organizers and supporting residents were very well prepared for that: there was cold water, gatorade and fruits, ice cold wet towels at start/finish line and water sprinklers turned to showers along the course.
The overall scenery was just like a discotheque club with many runners wearing flashing ornaments and Police cars with emergency lights.
I liked the tech T-shirt and a cap with the race logo however a medal would be a better choice than the personalized tile.
Livingston, thank you for a unique night race.

"Nice & different race you'll want to experience!" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Loonies Midnight Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I ran the 2013 Loonies Midnight Marathon this past weekend. I went into this race, not looking for anything amazing in regards to how I'd do, I just thought it would be 'neat' to do something 'quite different'! Here are my thoughts:

Pros:
1) Great organization - Most every detail that REALLY matters was well taken care of
2) The water stops were well placed and staffed! The amount of people staying up all night to support us was unbelieveable.
3) Traffic control - The major intersections had great police presence and the lesser ones had volunteers doing a fine job.
4) Spectators - While there were not that many, the ones there (all night) were vocal & encouraging. 2 people set up sprinkler sprays for us (even if one did go to bed around 2:00 a.m., but who could blame him). One intersection had a guy playing a banjo for us.
4) The main water stop near the start/finish line had 'ice cold wash rags' which were GREAT to help cool you off.
5) The timing company worked with me to input my finishing time, since my bib got turned around my waist and didn't register it.
6) Parking was 'right at the start/finish'.
7) Elevation chart was 'spot on', in case you need to know what to expect, prior to registering.
8) Tech shirt AND a running cap (with a 'Boston Strong' ribbon included) was great, PLUS your own personalized finisher's tile. I ALWAYS want a medal but with all of the above, I can 'live without it' this time.

Cons:
1) Next year use larger cups at the water stops. It always took me 2-3 times to get enough fluid from them.
2) Replace the post race 2-liter soft drinks (with the ice not easily found) with ice cold cans or 16.9 ounce bottles.

Nothing about this race was 'too bad' to ever make someone not want to participate. The 5 lap loop got to be boring but I knew that would be the case before I signed up. If you're looking for a 'fun, different, one-of-a-kind marathon experience', this should be near the top of your list!

Thanks again for a fun night!

"Great small race" (about: 2013)

50+ previous marathons | 1 Loonies Midnight Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This race got good reviews and it is geographically convenient. With that in mind, I signed up for this race with low expectations. Boy was I surprised; this is a great small race. There was plenty of water, Gatorade, food, Port-O Johns, and good post-race food. They volunteers were outstanding; after staying up all night they were still very enthusiastic at 5-1/2 hours. The race director is great. The course is an initial 1.2 mile loop, followed by 5 loops of 5 miles each. The course is in town and well lighted. It is almost totally flat. In the dark, the boring course is not noticeable. The sunrise was outstanding. This was the second running and it went off as smoothly as if it had been run many more times. It grew from 61 runners in 2012 to 238 in 2013. This race has everything I want and I will be back next year. Hearing the roosters crow at sunrise was real neat.
