"Great little marathon." (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Walla Walla Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

I was sick for the Portland Marathon and dropped out the weekend before and wanted to find another one. Walla Walla marathon is the one I chose and it ended up being a great experience. Very small field but well organized, good course marking, accurate mile markers, good aid stations. Very helpful volunteers and course marshals. I liked being able to park 30 feet from the start and no lines for bathrooms. Nice drive Portland to Walla Walla too.

"Very well marked course for the Half." (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Walla Walla Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

I ran the Half Marathon as part of a birthday 'wine tasting and running' weekend with my friends and it was fantastic!

I usually run marathons, but I saw this course was a double loop and opted for the half because of this. I did hear that next year they are going to change the marathon course so it isn't just running the 13 twice. If so, it would probably be worth running the Full next year.

Elevation gain from mile 6-13 is around 285ft. It is mostly gradual with only about 2 steep short hills

Pros: Beautiful course
-Small, around 200-300 total runners
-Weather was cool and dry, around 45F start, warming to around 60F midday.
-Relatively easy, mostly flat until around mile 6 then slow gain.
-WELL MARKED! The race coordinators did a great job marking the half.
-Lots of fantastic volunteers
-Ample water and 2 stations for gel
-Few spectators, but the ones that were out were friendly and super cool.
-General feel of the race was positive and friendly.
-Shirts and medals were very nice quality for such a small race
-In Walla Walla wine country, so make a weekend of it and go wine tasting in the cute town or out at the vineyards

Cons:
-No one in town knew there was a race going on.
-No hotels 'right next to the start'..closest was about a 20min walk to the start line
-We couldn't find the park on our maps programs, for some reason it was coming up as another name. When we asked at the packet pick up the response was 'there's a map online.' We said we were from out of town and the 2 older ladies promptly ignored us and a young girl tried to give directions.
-Packet pick up was easy, but the two women handing out the stuff were uninterested and almost rude to us, but then completely friendly when their friends walked in. We thought it was a 'locals' thing, but when talking to the other runners from town, the consensus was the packet people were just weird.
-This is a small race, so don't expect a giant expo... no swag, no freebies, just a really nice shirt and medal at the end.
-The course is open to traffic, but drivers were few and far between and the ones that were on the road were supportive and respectful.
-The last, probably, .4miles in have you run up to the park on a very short stretch of the worst broken up sidewalk ever. It's short, but it's worth looking down as you run that part.
-The medal only said Marathon(I have guilt wearing a medal that says marathon when I ran the Half instead) and it did not have the date on the medal itself, just on the lanyard. Still really nice though.
-It's been 3 days and the race results are still not posted. Come on, there were only around 300 people...

Over all the Half combined with wine tasting in and around town is worth the trip! If they change the Marathon course next year so it doesn't loop, I believe this Marathon could become a destination race.
