Course is good, not too hilly. Crowds and sites will be sparse. If you need crowd support or great views to get you through a race, go elsewhere. Indoor bathrooms and lots of parking right next to the start/finish. First mile is on the NASCAR track. This was my 11th marathon overall and I PR'd here. Also BQ'd. Weather was awesome too. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fast race that has a small field.

(about: 2017) 1 previous marathon \| 1 Monster "Mash" Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Ran the half marathon last year. Decided to run my first marathon this year. Had some problems on mile 17 due to sugar drop and probably too much caffeine. A support truck showed up on the road and Monica cared to my needs. I was a mess for several miles but Monica had water and some oranges. Thank you. That was enough to get me back on the road to finish at 5:50. Many runners offered support and another gentleman who gave me a salt pill. Thank you Sir. Very organized race. It's small but first class all the way. All volunteers and Police and Firefighters Thank you. Course very flat with plenty of aid stations. Awesome opening ceremonies - Stephanie Holmes did a beautiful job with National Anthem and God Bless America.

L. from Denver, CO (2/26/2017) "Small town race with big race feel" (about: 2016) 6-10 previous marathons \| 1 Monster "Mash" Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Monster Mash was my 7th overall marathon and so far is absolutely one of my favorites. The town of Dover is small enough to get around quickly and easily but has all the amenities you might need before a race. Packet pick-up is a breeze and is hosted by the race director right outside of Dover International Speedway. A few shirts and other swag for sale too if you want it. The morning of the race was extremely well organized with toilets of Dover International Speedway open to the racers for use and they were a solid 20 second walk away from the start line. Plenty of parking near the start too. The first mile of the race is a loop on the actual race track which was awesome, and from there it's out onto the streets of Dover. The first 6 or so miles wind through town and then it's out to open corn fields through small towns and farms for the next 20 miles but there's spectators, aid stations, and open road galore! There's a short out and back around the half way point which was actually a bit refreshing. The course is well marked for the half, the full, and I was never confused which way to go. There's a small hill before the finish but then you shoot down hill and finish right outside the stadium at the giant Miles the Monster statue, a very cool finish! Can't recommend this race enough! Pros: Excellent organization and communication from race director Flat, flat, flat easy to follow and FAST course Mile around Dover Speedway is AWESOME Cons In spite of race name I never once heard 'The Monster Mash' song played Huge missed opportunity to start the race with a green flag and end it by waving the checkered flag Turnaround point from out and back could probably use a cone or something to mark it

(about: 2016) 6-10 previous marathons \| 1 Monster "Mash" Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Awesome flat course! Well marked and lots of water/Gatorade/potties on the course! Volunteers were awesome and so were police/officials who stood out in pouring rain and heavy winds the whole race! Thanks for that! I can't find any negatives to this race. My husband also ran the Half and PR'd! They sang God Bless America and National Anthem ... Nice touch! Despite the weather, a really great day! We will run it again Lord willing! :)

Starts on the racetrack which is cool. But you run a lap around and its pitched! Hard to run with so many people trying to stay on the flattest section. A bit crowded. I would be nice to finish on the track as well. But finishing at the monster statue is cool. The course is very flat and well marked (it rained the entire race in 2016, so it was a bit miserable but a nice scenic course nonetheless.) Bottom Line: a semi-low key race with great swag and very well organized. Great race for 50 staters.

K. from NJ (10/23/2015) "Low key, no frills, organized and fast race" (about: 2015) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Monster "Mash" Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This race delivers as advertised. If you want the big crowds of an NYC or Chicago, then this is not for you. However, if you are looking for great organization, easy logistics and a flat and fast course, you cannot beat Monster Mash. Dover is a great little city to stage a marathon, and the hotels in the area are affordable if booked early. I came in on Friday, made it to the expo and was in and out in 10 minutes. The volunteers were great there and thanks for the candy! There are plenty of places to grab food in the area as well, so had a meal close by. The race itself is spectacular. No hassle race morning and loved the start on the track. The course itself is scenic. After you get out of Dover and split from the half at mile 6, it's miles and miles of flat farmland and cornfields. The roads are open but the local police and volunteers do a great job of keeping you out of harm's way and there were no problems at all with passing cars. The volunteers were fantastic and the aid stations were plentiful. Just water/juice and gels, so if you need something else, pack it yourself. The other runners out on the course were friendly and supportive and it was nice to pass some miles with some of them. The finish line comes after a nice little downhill to give you a final push to the end. Finish line festivities were perfect - beer and water and food. I didn't stay too long since i had to get on the road and get home, but everyone seemed to enjoy the post-race. While it's out of control of the RD, we couldn't have had nicer weather than this year provided. I was able to PR and recommend this race to anyone looking for the same. It delivers. Many thanks to the RD and volunteers who came out.
j. e. from Pennsylvania (10/18/2015) "FLAT, organized, fun" (about: 2015) 11-50 previous marathons \| 4-5 Monster "Mash" Marathons COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is my 4th year running this. It's just special to me. Logistically, easy to drive to, packet pickup at the Monster is simple, always prime goodie bag with quality shirts and a few extras. Nicest race director ever, who takes every recommendation to heart and puts them into action for the following year. Unique venue with speedway for the first mile. Course is very flat 120 feet of elevation that you don't even feel except the overpass at the end. I working thru a 'hip' thing so really notice the camber of the road...some places very banked. 10 year age group awards...and those middle aged women are stinkin' fast. There is one section (mile 11 to 13.5 or so) that is an out and back so not my favorite but on the return you are over half way done, so a bonus. The course is well marked every mile. Only issue was when the half and full marathoners split the people that were directing runners didn't tell which way to go unless you asked. I would make that very apparent with a big sign and make sure those volunteers yell it out. As distance runners, were not always thinking logically...at least this one doesn't. The pancake flat course for me that insures calf cramps, so I don't consider it a fast course. It is like a very pleasant long run with few spectators, open farmland with the smells and road kill that goes hand in hand (and head winds), sun and blue skies, with some recognition after your endeavors. I don't need the frills and music every mile, in fact, don't want it, so I love this. The aide stations are numerous with kind people manning them. 2 gel stations (forget which miles), complimentary food and beer at the finish. It is a Saturday 7am start so you have the remainder of the weekend to relax. Medal is always fun and colorful. Again, I commend the RD and all the volunteers that put this on...always top notch. It is always special to hear the story of the Race Director's father, who started Dover Downs. What a vision. All involved in MMM truly make you feel special from packet pickup until you cross that finish line. It's very personable.

H. from Massachusetts (10/28/2014) "A well run low key marathon" (about: 2014) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Monster "Mash" Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This is a great value, a well run marathon with a small field (at the moment) on a fast course. When word gets out how convenient the race is, and how fast I'm guessing the number of runners will pick up. If you book in advance the area hotels are very reasonably priced, if you wait to the last minute that might not be the case. In New England when people say a course is flat, I expect some small rolling hills. When they say the Monster Mash course in Dover is flat, they really mean it. It is incredibly flat, you won't have to make any adjustments for hills at all. Course is well marked with arrows on the pavement (just pay attention when the half and full courses split, I think it's just after mile 6) and every mile has an easy to see marker. Venue is perfect, with a massive parking lot just steps from the start and restroom facilities. The start on the track is a lot of fun, then you run through town, then out into the corn fields for most of the race. If you need bands, crowds of spectators or an expo (MM has no expo, just number pickup) this isn't your race. If you're the kind of runner who just needs some water, an accurate course and an accurate time it's great. Benefits the Wounded Warrior Project. There's just nothing for me to not like about Monster Mash.

N. from SC (10/20/2014) "Small, home-town marathon in rural DE" (about: 2014) 11-50 previous marathons COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 Was not sure what to expect with the Monster Mash marathon, but overall it was a great experience. Surprised to not have an expo, but did get to meet the race director personally. The overall organization was good. The course starts on the Dover International Speedway which was super cool. Course winds through cornfields outside of Dover. Crowd support minimal, but all the water stations were fantastic. Portajohns along the way were great. Beautiful medal and perfect shirt. Only suggestion for the event would be better food for runners at the end. BBQ available, but had to pay for food. Would highly recommend this race. Well done!!

Course was very well marked, and there were plenty of enthusiastic volunteers and police to insure runners did not miss turns. Water/ Gatorade stops were appropriately placed and well-stocked. Maps made it very easy for supporters to find their athletes. The course was designed to capture all that Dover and environs had to offer. Great shirts and medals.
