"Beautiful course but rough packed dirt road" (about: 2014)

The course ran along a beautiful river but the road surface was much too rough or me, with dips and fairly large gravelly spots. Volunteers were wonderful. Unique medal locally made was nice. Small number of runners. Very low key type marathon.

This was my 20th marathon and my favorite. All the volunteers were awesome, very friendly and always encouraging the runners. There were plenty of aid stations and toilets.
The run along the river is very green and beautiful. Special Thanks to Sue and Jesse for holding my ipod on the course and then mailing it to me because I forgot to pick it up. I definitely will do this race again!

This was a small, woodsy, scenic race. It was very well organized with plenty of Gu/water stations. The volunteers were very enthusiastic and friendly. The colorful signs along the trail were awesome and gave you a moment of laughter during the race. The medal is fantastic! Definitely my favorite race and medal to date. I will definitely do this race again.

My husband is attempting to run the 50 states. This Idaho marathon fit our schedule and we are so happy it did.
Jesse Baker is a fine race director who paid attention to details that matter to marathoners.
The course was beautiful. (took off one star for the surface of the course in some areas, medium sized rocks, not too bad.)
Weather was ideal. Overcast and 50F. The best mile markers ever! Aid stations? Oh yes! Little boiled potatoes and salt. Showing off their Idaho! Great food.
In fact, my husband said he dreamed of the Kiwanis Pancakes the whole race. I sure did enjoy that post race meal. ($7.00 and for a good cause!)
If you can, you should run this race. Northern Idaho is gorgeous and St. Maries knows how to put on a marathon.

Well organized, personal, packed dirt surface along the river, no more than 2% grade except several short hills intown; nice extra touches like potatoes and salt and homebaked cookies along the course. Sufficient and attentive drink, food and aid support. Early start option. Spectators only in town THANKFULLY we got the trail to ourselves except aid traffic. St. Maries is central to a host of Idaho touring options: rail-to-trail biking, old mining, timber, and old growth cedar sites. Creative medals and tshirts:) Excellant food: Bud's Drive Inn. Thanks, St. Maries!

"Really good inaugural event" (about: 2011)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 St. Joe River Marathon

The course along the St. Joe River is beautiful but it was a bit short. Could have a better ending rather than running up a hill just to run back down again (although it meant you got to cross the finish line moving really fast). Because of the way the course was set up, there was a really long distance between aid stations after the marathon turn around. These are minor problems that are easily remedied, I would definitely run the St. Joe again. My favorite spectators were the cows that were actually watching the race! You could see them follow the runners as they passed the pasture. The people at the aid stations were very supportive and cheered on the runners but there were no other spectators along the way. Although the rural nature of the run made it difficult for spectators to get to the route without driving the road we were running along. The medals and trophies are AWESOME! Thanks for a wonderful event.

"An EXCELLENT Marathon" (about: 2011)

This marathon was AMAZING! The course was beautiful, the organizers were phenomenal and the town was charming! It was a perfect day for a run and the quiet course made you feel like the day was made just for you and this one run. Spectators were scarce, but enthusiastic, especially if you count the horses who gallped down to their fence to watch the silly humans run 26+ miles! The stations are plenty and well stocked and they were always ready for you with a smile. The course is fire road all gravel, nice on the joints and not too hard on the feet. I ran it in my vibrams without too much inconvenience. The support through the town was great with the Kiwanis club making a pancake carbloading dinner the night before and turned around and did it again pre-race. This town gets up early so need to pack your own toaster-you could get a full breakfast at 5am if you wanted to&so coffee was not scarce either! The shirt is one of my new running favorites and the medal is the best! The marathon from beginning to end was an excellent experience and the hometown crowd made you feel right at home.

For their first time ever to organize an event this large, took a lot of energy to get it done. The chairman, Jesse Baker, did a fantastic job putting it all together, making sure every thing was in order. Biggest problem was that they were expecting maybe 125 to 150 participants, not 514. It just blew their mind. Enough praises can not be given to the chairman who is only 25 and also works for the Idaho Department of Lands fighting wild fires.

Small group of runners and a beautiful, quiet place to run. The people in the town were very enthusiastic, encouraging and friendly. There were yummy Idaho potatoes and bananas at the water stations. Shirts were a nice material and the medals were unique (fish shaped - I haven't run too many marathons but this was my favorite medal so far!). The road was mostly dirt with gravel and we got to see some horses on the run, too.
