"Well organized, local race!" (about: 2015)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 USA Fit Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was my first USA Fit Marathon. It's a smaller event with the goal of giving everyone a chance to complete a marathon. The race is organized very well with plenty of aid stations and friendly volunteers. My full race review is located on my blog: http://www.pathtotri.com/memorial-hermann-usa-fit-marathon/

I'd recommend this to new marathoners and experienced Houston runners looking for another fun race to add to their schedule!

"Well-run, small, low-key race" (about: 2014)

The course is flat and fast. Marathoners run two loops, but because of the out-and-back branches marathoners run past everything four times. It's suburban Houston; you don't run this for the scenery. Weather was close to ideal. Field is small, which is a huge plus at the start and for things like parking. The field does thin out considerably once the half-marathoners are gone: not a problem if you find someone else running your pace or you're OK running alone for long stretches. Plenty of well-staffed water stations.

Although this is a marathon event, it had the prestige of a 5K, with very little crowds, very little support, and at least when I ran it, terribly hot weather. ran my half marathon PR on this course with a time of 2:03, and although it felt good finishing, this race was a terrible experience. While finishing, I was sunburned, overheated, and just wanted to be done.

"Really NiceThis is a small race. Would do again" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 USA Fit Marathon

The marathon has a very SMALL group of participants. Nothing wrong with that, just be prepared for it to be really stretched out on the second loop.

I think it is cool that they have an early start for people who want to walk the routeI started with the regular group and had ZERO issues with the walkers at any point during the run.

Course is 100% concretewhich is common for south Texas, and it is fairly flat as advertised.

I also think it is neat that you cannot get your shirt until you FINISH. It is a finisher shirt and it is also nice that the shirts are dedicated to the race that you run (marathon or half).

No GU on the course (that I can remember) but there were some pretzels and Oreos being handed out. Aid workers did a good job of being ready to helpand one even ran after me to 'fuel me' after I missed the handoff.

Other than people near the start/finish, you won't see supportersjust the facts with the course and small number of participants.

I hope they keep this weekend for future racesnice that it is late January and not a football playoff weekend.

I would do this event again.

"USA fit does a wonderful marathon" (about: 2013)

Course was pure genius. Thank you very much for a race older runners can finish. So much work goes into this, amazing. 147 runners finished under 6 hours, 50 over. Clock was kept open as four runners were over the eight hour limit. I only wish many more of the FIT walkers would show up for this. It was created for them when CHM booted them. I did the first one. Have 31 marathons, 30 in lst 4 years, 10 states, 4 are ultrtas, 3 are 50's. Health issues this year though.

This was a runner friendly, small marathon that accommodated fast and slow runners. There was plenty of time to finish. The course was a little boring, but it was completely flat. There were more spectators than I expected and the water stations were appropriately spaced and well organized. the weather was clear and cool.

"Great organization, too many sharp U-Turns" (about: 2012)

Organization was great, weather perfect, but they had way too many sharp U-turns that broke up the rhythm. Still, I recommend this one because it was so well organized. Post race food area was pretty good. Nice finisher shirt and medal.

Probably geared more for locals (and those who didn't get into the Houston marathon). I was a little surprised by the registration fee for this event. Bib pickup in an orthopaedic office lobby on Saturday wasn't very obvious. Host hotel was reasonable (convenient shuttle and early breakfast & checkout). Would have been nice if the university campus building was open rather than having to huddle out of the morning chill in the doorways. The course itself was frankly rather boring, looping through vast undeveloped tracts of land and around enclaves of million dollar homes. You did get to see and cheer other runners across the median in the various out-and-back sections several times. Volunteers and friend/family support were the only spectators. Excellent work though by the volunteer groups and water/aid stations. There were a few 'bonus' stations with people handing out snacks/ wet cloths etc. Finisher sweatshirt and medal were unique to the event and race. A good postrace; food (burgers!), massages etc. There looked to still be plenty of food even after most of the 1/2'ers had gone through. Course allowed for faster runners going for BQ as well as first timers or walkers (although they could have done a better job of separating the paces at the start). This year the weather during the race was perfect, but considering that there is not a lick of shade on the course it would have been especially tough in rain or heat.

"Disorganized from the Start" (about: 2011)

This could be a great race except I don't like arriving 1.5 hours before start time and then having the run delayed in 15-minute increments for a total of 45 minutes. This was hard to deal with because of the driving rain; everyone was in their cars and could not hear any announcements. They should have more porta-potties at the start line. Great after-race food, even though it was on an open parking lot in the driving rain. Streets opened up to traffic 4 hours sooner than the advertised 8 hours. Good police protection on major intersections. The weather is what it is, but runner protection before, during, and after the run is management's responsibility.

"Fast and flat" (about: 2011)

2 previous marathons | 1 USA Fit Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

Cold and rainy, but this course was flat and fast. Compared to the half in San Antonio in November 2010, this race course was close to home, and super easy to complete. Thanks to all of the police officers and volunteers who worked this event in the cold rain.... Awesome! :)
