If you are looking for a great run in the woods this is the one for you...if you are looking for cheering fans you need to look elsewhere. I must admit that this course ranks among my top five in terms of difficulty and scenic beauty..you have to try it!!!

Ran this event for the first time in 2011. Is a low-key event based on two loops of a half-marathon route that is around a beautiful lake but is deceivingly tough as runners weave their way around the surrounding hills. Nice, relaxed organization. Was a few hundred runner doing the half-marathon, 70 or so doing the full and 20-30 hardy souls doing the 50km race.

The race starts a little after dawn at the Lake Chabot marina. After two miles on the path, the route heads off-road (and up) on an undulating course through great trails. Three well-stocked refreshment points are positioned at the start/finish and at around 5miles and 9miles. From that final station it is almost all downhill and flat to the finish, with the last two miles being on the path back to the marina where the race started.

With tiring legs, the second loop is more challenging - especially the major down sections when your quadriceps start to complain. Even the gentlest climbs and declines on the final path section hurt as the final line approaches. Generous amounts of soda, hot soup and snacks are available at the end.

This is a super event over some stunning scenery. Don't be fooled, however, into thinking it will make a pleasant Saturday morning run. This is a real challenge but, through the combination of the setting and the organizers, a very enjoyable one.
