This was my first ultramarathon. The first hours of the 50 miler finds you in the dark, a member of a locomotive guided by headlamps. The closeness led to a sincere kinship with your pack. At first light, the beauty of your surroundings gives you a refreshing lift. Never take you eyes off of the trail. Unless you are a veteran of true technical trail runner, this will be the most technical terrain you have ever seen. The event staff are superb, and the volunteers deserve all of your appreciation. They and the DNR put as much effort into ensuring the success of the run as the North Face. I highly recommend the race. This will challenge you, regardless of experience. Also, Dean Karnazes offered his guidance, and he has the privilege of shaking your hand if you finish before he leaves.

Ran the 50-mile race. Well-organized race, though not too many aid stations due to the race being run completely in single-track trails. There were a few very well-stocked aid stations at road crossings, as well as a few scattered spectators. Nothing flat; uneven surfaces with rocks, roots, creeks, and anything and everything that Mother Nature can throw at you. You will have to dig deep to get to that finish line. Many runners did not make the cut-off. Excellent race! It was my first ultra and I am hooked for life.

Completed the marathon distance. Very challenging, rocky terrain. Hilly and mountainous course, for the serious trail runner. You could call this a black diamond for running trails. For the most part, the race was well supported - great volunteers. The trails were easy to follow and navigate. It would have been nice to have another aid station in the middle of the race. There was a 7-mile gap between miles 10 and 17 that made it challenging. Very nice, North Face, tech shirt and a medal were given out. Also, no-show socks were much appreciated. Seeing Dean Karnazes was very cool too - he kicked off the race. Distance advertised I have seen at 25.7; my Garmin read 26.4 at the finish. I did make a slight wrong turn once, but I felt like it was a true marathon distance. Only complaints were: the BBQ at the end was not really an ideal post-race food. Let me just say that it didn't stay down long. Also, I felt the medical staff at the post-race area was a little lackadaisical. I was lightheaded and my wife, who happens to be a nurse, recommend I get an IV. I asked for one and they acted like I was fine, that I didn't need one. They told me to lie down, which I did. I just thought that, after an ultra race, it shouldn't be that big of a deal to get an IV. I have done it at other events, and was just surprised not to see them react a little more quickly rather than question me. Also, at the finish line they provided empty bottles for you to use to fill up. These were cool, black, Gore-Tex, metal bottles, but they were empty and I had to search the tents for water. I am always amazed at how hard it is at some races to find a drink at the end. After plowing for 26 miles through mountains, we aren't exactly 100% when we roll through at the end. Just simply having some water coolers right next to the finish would be incredibly appreciated. I'd certainly run the race again, but it almost seemed to be geared towards the very experienced ultra-runner. Hope to be able to go for a longer distance next year... train on hard terrain for this one, or you will pay!

"A true endurance challenge!" (about: 2010)

If you're looking for a change of pace from road races, this is it.

As advertised, the trail was rocky/rooted single track with occasional stretches of hard pack and lots of ascents/descents. Website info for the Atlanta event (part of a series) was timely and accurate. Race director and staff clearly went to great effort to take care of the runners: aid stations with medical personnel were well-spaced and well-stocked; course markings were obvious and clearly explained. Volunteers were enthusiastic and did a good job of safely managing traffic at the few road crossings. ("Spectators" rating is 2 stars only because there are so few of them, but their enthusiasn deserves 6 stars.)

Published distance between aid stations added up to 26.3 miles so I considered this my first "ultra," but rumor has it the "marathon" distance was actually close to 30 miles. No matter; Pine Mountain was beautiful/interesting and the barbecue in the finish area seemed even more well-earned.

If you are interested in getting off of the asphalt and these folks are producing an event in your part of the country, it's time to sign up.
