"great organization, good footing" (about: 2014)

| 1 The North Face Endurace Challenge - Madison
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 This was my first 50-miler, and it was a good choice. There are more rolling hills than I expected, but I was still able to jog up most of them (and I only walked a few). The aid stations are well-stocked and are 4-5mi apart. The organization is very good, and the course was well-marked (though some 50mi runners apparently cut off ~2miles and had implausibly fast splits for their first 6.9mi). Some runners got lucky enough to run alongside Dean Karnazes (he did the full 50mi at what was an easy pace for him). The hot meal and the free beer at the end are a nice touch. The footing was better than the North Face DC run and was not really technical (but I liked running it with trail shoes as opposed to road shoes). The only out-and-back section in the 50mi (miles 21-35) was double-track, and the return section for the 50mi/50K/marathon is also mostly double-track, so it's not hard to pass people (also unlike the North Face DC, where it's a single-track with head-on collisions). Areas for improvement: they could give us a choice of colors for t-shirts, instead of just the bright yellow shirt (if you bring or buy your own North Face shirt, they can screen it for you) there's only one massage table at the end (it was great, but expect a long wait) the medals could be nicer and customized to the distance (as opposed to using the same medal but with different ribbons) the age-group awards (a water bottle with a hand-grip) are disappointing and would be better if replaced with plaques or medals

"Loved it." (about: 2012)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my first 50 miler, and as such will always be special to me. Aid stations are amazing, as a previous poster described - they have everything, and the volunteers do everything they can to help you. I was fortunate enough to train on the course so I knew what I was in for - there aren't a ton of large steep hills, but there are A LOT of little rollers that WILL wear you out. For a course in the Midwest without a ton of scenic landmarks it is very pretty at times and the trails you run on are maintained well. This race is a very good choice for a first ultra.

"Well put on event" (about: 2012)

| 1 The North Face Endurace Challenge - Madison
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Ran my first 50 Miler, I hear this is one of the flatter courses for doing a 50 but I was not so sure during the race. Aid stations are well stocked, lots of extras with an entry (arm warmers, Bottles, Nice shirt) the medal could be nicer... just ran 50 freaking miles it should make all my other medals look small...

"VERY ENJOYABLE RACE" (about: 2011)
6-10 previous marathons
| 4-5 The North Face Endurace Challenge - Madisons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 I have ran the 50k race for the last 4 yrs. The aid stations can not be beat. They have everything from brownies soup potatoes soda gels and assorted candy. I am sure i am missing other items. The medal tshirt and arm warmers and water bottle are very nice. They also have a hot meal at the end of race. Dean karnaze officates the race and presents the awards. The race takes place on the ice age trail with quite some challenging hills. Volunteers are great. I hope to do race every year |
