"A great race, going downhill??" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 5

I have done this race every year for three years. My fiance has been participating every year for 5 years. The course is beautiful, winding its way aroud three lakes and the UW's Arboritum. There are plenty of well manned water stations. The course is mostly flat with a few minor hills. This is a great race!!!

However, I think that the quality of the little extras that make races a little more fun went down hill this year. The race shirt is the worst one I have ever seen. It is purple text with pink pictures. One of the pictures is the Monona Terrace Convention Center, which is not on the race route at all. The racepackets contained nothing but the number and timing chip, not even a single mini power-bar. Not that that makes a huge deal, but when you are paying $55.00 for a t-shirt you will never wear, a consolation prize, no matter how small makes a difference.

The post race was dissappointing as well. For the last two years they have given out cool medals, this year's was a lame and equally ugly patch. I have thrown it out already. There was only one food tent with only one or two people serving food. The line to get food was over two hundred people waiting to get yogurt or orange slices. I am not sure if this is to inspire runners to go faster next year, so that they can be early enough to get food.

Perhaps the reason that the race extras were so disppointing is a lack of corporate sponsorship. Perhaps it was due to the the downturn in the economy. That is unfortunate, but understandable. However, if this is due to a lack of effort, then the race management team needs to be reevaluated.

Yes I will be doing this race again next year.

"Nice race, pretty course, ugly shirt" (General Comments)

I like the course, pretty flat and fast and the support is o.k. but not great.
The organization is improved from 1999 when the 1/2 marathon started at the 1/2 way point of the marathon an hour and a half after the start of the marathon. As someone who reached the 1/2 way point in 1:33 I didn't like having to come through the whole 1/2 marthon field (walkers included). It really slowed me down. On the down side, I've done 12 marathons and the shirts here are the worst I've ever seen. If I'm going to run a marathon I'd like to receive a shirt that I can wear around for something other than coloring my hair and painting.

"This is one of the best races I have done" (General Comments)

I have run marathons all over the country, New York, San Diego, Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland to name a few, and consider Madison one of the best. The organization is absolutely first rate, the spectators fun, and the course scenic. Can't wait to get to it again this year. Haven't missed a year since I began four years ago.

"my favorite race" (General Comments)

It was my second time doing this race, and I can't wait to be back there again next year. It blows away the Chicago Marathon. I think the 30,000+ races are overrated, the peacefulness of the madison route, the lakes, the forest, and the good spirit of the fans whom you begin to recognize after seeing the same people at different mile markers, are all wonderful highlights of this event. Even through the cold and rain, its a beauty! Can't wait to go back!

"An Undiscovered Treasure!" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

After running this race, my biggest question was 'why isn't this great race better known?' There were only about 700 finishers this year, and runners are missing a real treat. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous as the course takes you through Madison, around 3 lakes, and through an arboretum. While the crowds were small, they and the volunteers were incredibly vocal and supportive. The course alternates between significant flat stretches and moderate hills. You do get some headwinds around the lakes, particularly at the latter miles. Bottom line is that this race is simply incredible!

"Scenic course with excellent organization/support" (about: 1999)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Madison has an excellent, scenic course with fantastic organization and support. The weather was brutally hot in 1999, but race officials claim it is usual more reasonable. Fan support is sporadic, but enthusiastic. Great town to visit before and after the marathon.
