The RD was AWESOME!! He dropped our packets at the hotel where we were staying, and provided water, GU, and dog tags (in lieu of a medal) ALL FREE!! He and his wife were encouraging throughout the race. He allowed different start times (to his sleep detriment) to accommodate everyone). This was an out-and-back (seven times for the marathon) course, which may sound boring; but it had 3 bridges (one covered) and a neat, old mill-looking building. In addition, it was mostly shaded in the park. I enjoyed the course. It was the day after Grandfather's and that allowed for a double, which was nice. The spectator/crowd support is composed exclusively by you. You cheer for others you see running and vice versa. Had a blast!

Bring this race back next year! (about: 2010)

A very well done race! The course is paved running trail through a wooded setting that starts at a sports complex. The race director couldn't have been more accommodating! There really weren't a lot of spectators, but the volunteers who were there were so encouraging! I had to give them a high rating! The race is the day after Grandfather Mountain, so it's an excellent opportunity to do two marathons in one weekend... not that I did both! I really hope that this race will continue. I think it will gain in popularity! Thanks, Matt and all volunteers, for a great race experience!

A "RAVE" Run!! (about: 2010)

I LOVED IT!!!!! Definitely doesn't fit the model of a typical marathon, but definitely a RAVE RUN for me!! The course is a 7-loop out/back, starting and finishing at the Boone Greenway trailhead, and it meanders through mountain ranges and gorgeous scenery. As the name implies, this course stays in the valley with minimal elevation changes. KUDOS to RD Matt Jenkins - great organization, hospitality, and support!!! NO entry fee, free accommodations, GU, and plenty of water on the course all make for a GREAT marathon! If you need lots of spectator support, a big expo, and all of the hoopla that goes with such an event, this might not be your bag, but if you're willing to give this one a shot, you won't be disappointed! AWESOME JOB, MATT!!
