"A Quite Unexpected Great Race..." (about: 2012)

50+ previous marathons | 1 Mesquite Tri-State Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I had no expectations coming into this race other than expecting a very fast opening half. Even the second half, however, after gaining a couple hundred feet in Mile 13 and 14 then loses 500' from Mile 15 to the finish, more than most marathons lose over their entire 26.2 miles. I was expecting a faster than usual time but never in my wildest dreams did I expect to PR but that's exactly what I did, bettering my St. George Marathon time from six weeks earlier despite being up three pounds and having a difficult marathon (Malibu International) just six days earlier.

If you don't overdo it in the opening 10 miles, you can have a great race here. The weather was absolutely perfect and we had no headwind that has struck in past years.

The organization was top notch with bib pickup a breeze, buses leaving right on time, race starting right on time, a DJ at start line then at finish line, aid stations every other mile and I liked that there were 5,500 fewer runners here than at St. George, allowing my wife to come out and easily cheer me as she drove the course. Really, I liked this race better than the much more heavily hyped St. George Marathon.

It was a great convenience to stay at the host hotel, the Casablanca Resort and it was a good bargain to do so plus they generously allowed us a 1pm checkout. Tip...post race champagne brunch buffet for $7.99 was great. Buses left from the host hotel, bib pickup at host hotel and finish line at host hotel...made for a great convenience and the hotel was nice enough with free valet parking and a Starbucks that opened at 4am.

I will definitely repeat this race again and again and it was one of my favorites in 105 marathons to date at the time of this writing.

Very enjoyable run, very well organized, warm hospitality in Mesquite. Great deals from CasaBlanca Resort. Not many spectators but most of the course is in the desert.

Running through three states in one marathon makes this race unique. The course is reasonable with a long gradual decline for the first half. The event was well organized and had plenty of food and drink along the way. My wife and I ran this one in 2011 and ran the Valley of Fire Marathon the day after. Both were organized by the same event company, and both races were outstanding. There were not many spectators along the way which is what I expected based on the location of the marathon (not a big city race). Schedule permitting, I would do this marathon again.

This was a very fun race! The course starts in Utah (6 miles), runs through Arizona (17 miles) and finishes in Nevada (3.2 miles). The first half is mostly downhill and fast, the second half was a bit deceiving on the site because the elevation doesn't show the hills at the end, which are pretty steep in some points. Beautiful course! It was shocking how small it was (participants) given how great it is.If you are a marathoner, then this is a must!

The Good:

1. Great organizers from the planning all the way to the finish! They were very current on FB asking what snacks we liked, colors for the shirt, medal, etc. Very nice to have such involvement and information from the directors.

2. Excellent volunteers and snacks at aid stations (pretzels, gummy bears)

3. Very nice medal and race shirt

4. Easy to navigate to bus at the start

5. Nice start line wait. It was scenic and there was a DJ playing music, yummy grain bars, and easy gear check.

6. The finish line was very unique- we ran into the convention center at the Casa Blanca, so as we ran into it, you could see the clock and people standing there cheering. Very fun!

7. Great course. How many people can say they ran a marathon through 3 states? An awesome opportunity!

8. Packet pick up for those running the Valley of Fire marathon was right there too, which was fantastic.

The Bad and not at all Ugly:

1. Too few Porta Johns at the start- even though it was a small race- there needed to be more bathrooms available at the start

2. The hills were deceiving on the elevation chart at the end. The site warns about hills but the elevation chart should be altered so it is more clear and people are aware of it.

Overall, great race, great support, and awesome runners! I would definitely run this again!

This was a great race from start to finish. Here is my opinion of the race.
PROS
*Loved finish tent/bag pickup/shuttle steps from hotel..extra sleep without transport worries makes this the best marathon!
*On time bussing to start..start had good support, and a heater!
*Awsome shirts, bags, and medals..great course support(m&ms, pretzels and gummybears!)
*Super neat to finish INSIDE..great tvs with your finish time and name felt like I was a pro!
*Amazing course/no spectators but this is one you crank your music and enjoy the serenity. Going through the gorge is breathtaking.
*Excellent communication with race director/neat race on FB..felt like we were a big running family!
CONS:
*Host hotel making runners check out by 11..now who can run under a 4hour race, recover and shower, AND check out ??Ridiculus for host hotel: Race director needs to either move hotel or work a deal with hotel to extend checkout time .
*Very hilly 2nd half:Steep 6to7%hill grades for almost the entire last half. Train for downhill start and super duper hills in last part of training.
*Runners all bussed up to start together, then we sat for an hour. Earlier start please! We will keep warm, and not have to fight with the hotel!!

Please keep this weekend next year: a super date, with cool weather. ALSO the double with TriState and Valley:how about a special medal for runners who complete both! This has the change to be the New Boston, NewYork and St. George race it was so good!

The elevation map is misleading because it has to show so much drop in the first half that it's difficult to show the ups and downs of the second half. I'd like to see the elevation map split into two halves with different scales.

Really, RD: 4 portapotties at the start for that many people, especially since we all arrived at once by bus? The line was horrendous. More portapotties, please.

Aid stations on the course were good.

Glad I wasn't doing the half, since it starts with a nasty uphill.

It was interesting ending inside a marquee, I've never finished inside a building before. Citrus fruit of some kind would be good for the finish line. And something cold to drink that wasn't beer.

Nice touch having packet pickup for VOF at the Mesquite finish line, since so many of us were doing both.

The race keeps getting larger and larger every year. Great Aid Stations and Support. Plenty of GU and Fruit. Good signs and police to keep you on the right track. They took care of the most important parts of the race. See you next year!

I live in Mesquite part-time, so I thought I would give the race a try. Cheap and convenient from Vegas or St. George. I had to register the day before the race, which was a bit chaotic. There wasn't an expo, which shouldn't surprise anyone given the number of participants. Course is great for those from out of town. Like others, the lack of people at the aid stations during the middle part of the race was frustrating - having to dig out your cup, pour your drink, and then put it in a small box. I carried my own gel packs, but didn't see a lot of those on the course, so I would recommend carrying your liquids for the best experience. Winds where brutal in 2010, and there is no relief as you're in the desert. Spectators are sparse, as it was a cold, windy, and on the verge of raining - and Mesquite is full of retired folks who wouldn't come outside on a day like that. A very convenient finish next to the hotel and tent.

"No aid station support!" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 2 Mesquite Tri-State Marathons

I've run this race once before, and had a good experience, but in 2010, half of the aid stations had nobody there - just cups under the table, and drink jugs on top. We had to stop and wait for other runners to fill up their drinks, and then fill up our own. It's a slow course, so I wasn't planning on getting a great time, but it was still a pain to have to stop for so long at the aid stations. Very disappointing.

This is an ideal event for adding one of three states to your list - though you should check the guidelines for what constitutes state completion. About 5 miles were in Utah, 15 in Arizona, and the final 6.2 were in and around Mesquite, Nevada. The course is predominantly downhill, which would normally translate into fast times, but this year wind gusts exceeded 50 mph. Sweeping, gorgeous vistas of the desert. Ample Gatorade, water, oranges, GU and apples along the course. Yogurt and bananas at the finish and a nice medal (though it represents all distances run - 5, 10, 21.1K, and marathon - so I could have run 5K and gotten the same medal). Cotton shirt-with $5 extra option for tech-t. Extremely reasonable entry fee. Highly recommended.
