"Very Nicely Done" (about: 2011)

Well organized event on a mainly flat, double loop course with just a few small rolling hills through a largely vacant 'if you build it, they will (hopefully) come' office/retail park just north of Jackson, MS. Course was open to traffic, but aside from a few busy intersections, which were superbly manned by Madison police officers, that was pretty much a non-issue.

Easy packet pickup, easy in and out with plenty of parking at the start/finish. On-course fan support was minimal but very enthusiastic. Great volunteers, well maintained aid stations, plenty of potties. Fantastic medical support.

I think this race probably has a higher percentage of first-time participants than do most events. Many were tested, and it was very moving to watch folks cross a finish line for the first time in their lives.

Well done!

"Really good marathon experience" (about: 2010)

Although I don't like long, flat stretches of road, I gave the course a 5-star rating for the double loop (which worked out very well for me, since my hubby wasn't there to be my road crew) and traffic control. The Madison Police did an outstanding job of controlling the areas of heavy traffic, but, due to the course design, there was very little traffic on the majority of the course. The volunteers were outstanding and they are the reason for the 5 stars for spectators! Thank you to the gentleman who found the Dr. Pepper I left at an aid station for my 2nd loop and iced it down! That's the perfect example of how attentive the volunteers were! The temps reached 95 degrees F. Heat is NOT my friend. I wouldn't have been able to finish if race staff hadn't arranged such excellent medical support in the form of St. Dominic's staff/volunteers, ice (lots of it!) and as many ice cold, wet, disposable towels as we needed. Race staff drove up and down the course passing them out and checking on everyone! There were so many porta-potties that I never had to wait in line and they stayed clean! Every detail appeared so well organized that, if there were any glitches, I wasn't aware of them! Cool tech shirts, cool finisher's t-shirts, and cool medals! I highly recommend this race to everyone!

First time to run this. I loved the double loop. This course had a few hills, but it was mostly flat. I loved the big hill at mile 25. Somebody had a good sense of humor to stick it there. Mile markers were huge flags and they seemed to be right on. Course support was as promised. The cheer crews did a really good job. The entry fee was kind of high, but I see that the money was well spent. Good job, race director.

"Flat course and Southern hospitality-plus!" (about: 2010)

A fantastic marathon experience. The course is flat and well marked. There were plenty of porta-potties in response to a request from 2009! The course was VERY well supported by helpful, encouraging volunteers. It was HOT, but the race director can't control the weather. There is no shade on the course, so beware! BUT all of the volunteers were passing out ice and ice water, along with towels dipped in ice water. The police were fantastic. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this race. I have never received so much support and personal attention! Even the other runners and their families were helpful. For example, at the finish line one runner's young daughter brought me a chair and an ice cold Coke while I was cooling down at the finish line! This race went beyond Southern hospitality! I'll be back!

Pros: terrific organization at packet pick-up and race; cheerful and helpful volunteers; varied course scenery; close parking to event; wonderful traffic control; fabulous finisher's medal!

Cons: need more port-o-potties; not a lot of community support along course (maybe advertise to cities and residents more).

This was my first full marathon and it was an awesome experience! This group runs the event for the participants and knows how to take care of us! Looking forward to next year!

Definitely needs more porta-potties on the route. Two are not enough. It seems nobody we asked knew about the race - even our hotel. It seems like maybe a letter from the Chamber of Commerce should go out to area businesses.

"A Nice Surprise" (about: 2009)

I have learned to be wary of first-year races, but was very pleasantly surprised by this one.

From packet pick up to race start to finish, the organization was nearly flawless. Good traffic management and friendly, helpful volunteers made the going easy.

Now, about the course itself: It had a nice mix of scenery from spillway road at the reservoir, through residential neighborhoods and down some park paths. Just enough elevation change along the way to keep you honest and work different muscle groups.

One other plus was the mall parking adjacent to the race start and finish. My tired legs really appreciate the short walk back to my car after 26.2 miles.

My congratulations to the race organizers and finishers... and a big thank you to those great volunteers who gave up half of their Saturday to see that we competitors were well taken care of.

"Great race but lonely" (about: 2009)

This was my second full marathon, and I have to say that I really enjoyed the course. I enjoyed the organization too. Everything about it spoke of professionalism. That said, I was disappointed in the lack of spectators out there cheering the runners on. With only a couple hundred people running the marathon, it did get lonely in certain spots when you were the only one there. The volunteers were fantastic though, cheering on all of the runners. I really liked the course.

This was my first ever marathon, and first in a series of 50 marathons in 50 states over the next few years. While it was chilly at the race start (and over that long bridge!), the race course was gorgeous and incredibly well-organized. Almost everything about the race was a positive experience. About the only negative I could think of is the small running field (only 171 runners), which made it very lonely for much of the race. But you can overcome that!
