"The run with a view" (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Grand Valley Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 I was surprised to find how a small marathon like this one could be so exciting. There were about 40 marathon runners and probably that is why I was able to win in my age group category. Being the only runner from Canada, I also won in the unofficial category "Canadian Runners." The out-and-back course along the Colorado River among vineyards and orchards was beautiful, with excellent view of the famous Palisade mesas. Many small hills slowed me down and did not let me finish below 4 hours. Weather was sunny and warm, with strong headwind after the half-way mark. Friends and families at the start/finish and volunteers at aid stations were the only active spectators. In summary: a scenic and very well organized and executed marathon. After the race I explored the fantastic Colorado NM and Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP. That was a super bonus. Thank you, Colorado!

"Will run it again!" (about: 2010)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Grand Valley Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 Great little race. Everyone was extremely friendly, and the views were breathtaking! It was windy but beautiful. Smaller race, with only about 100 marathoners, but it was very easy for my hubby and kids to drive and cheer me on in the car. I will run it again if I can fit it into my schedule.

"Great scenery - can only get better" (about: 2010)
50+ previous marathons
| 1 Grand Valley Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 The course runs out and back, and is very scenic - running along the Colorado River, then through rural areas that have peach orchards and vineyards along side the route. There were enough aid stations and porta-potties along the course. Move them to the same side for next year. Organization: there was a last-minute change to the dinner. Race expo suggestion: ensure that the host hotels knows where the expo and start are located. The Wine Country Inn was very nice and offered a good rate of $99. Decent medal and t-shirt. Please have a clock with the official time at the end; it's always nice for pics. Spectators were limited. I know this is only year 2, but more community involvement would be a plus. If you are within 4 hours, drive to this race; it's worth going to. It's close to the Colorado National Monument, which is a must-see.

"Rolling hills and amazing views" (about: 2010)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Grand Valley Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 This marathon was truly great. There were not many spectators, but not many runners either. The aid stations were stocked more than any other marathon I have ever done. The rolling hills and the wind off of the mesa were challenging. I would do this race again based on the support you feel from the volunteers and the small-town atmosphere. |
