"Great Long Run During the Indiana Winter" (about: 2017)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I was happy to run Maple Leaf again in 2017. Doug Yoder puts on a terrific event, even though the numbers were (inexplicably) down this year. Others describe the setting accurately. I just enjoy the chance to have a very comfortable long run in the winter on a forgiving surface with no harsh, cold wind to worry about. A hidden gem, well worth considering.

"Great race that weather isn't a problem." (about: 2017)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 A great winter race that you don't have to worry about the weather. Race director is a runner and it is well organized he even makes the medals. A soft rubber 4 lane track that you switch directions every 30 minutes. That really saves your legs. Great music and all the runners really talk to one another and cheer each other on. 4 tables to put your drinks and whatever you need to have close by. Bathrooms close and a shower when you are done. I would highly recommend this race. I liked it so much I ran the marathon Saturday and Sunday and brought a friend.

"Flat, Dry, Comfortably Warm, With No Wind" (about: 2017)

| 1 Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This pair of marathons (Sat./Sun.) was like a well kept secret, but I still found out about it. And it was indoors - appropriate for the upper Midwest in winter. The location was Goshen College, in an Indiana town with the same name. It was held in the Fitness and Recreation Center on campus. I had to drive a round campus a bit, following signs, to find the Rec Center, but the campus was small. The facility had basketball courts downstairs and a track on the mezzanine. Check in was race-day morning and it was smooth and routine. As others have commented, there were tables set up in the four corners of the oval track, so there was plenty of room to place personal items for carbs or hydration needs. The race was chip timed and runners reversed directions every 30 minutes. It worked perfectly. At the end of the oval near the start line is where the timing equipment was set up with a place for support people to hang out. And for a run with less than 20 marathoners, there were a quite a few people coming and going who cheered us on. The timing apparatus and software counted laps and displayed the data on a flat screen monitor so runners could track their progress. The finisher's 'medal' was actually a ceramic maple leaf with the year scribed in it. It was unique. There was event-provided Gatorade and water to supplement whatever each runner brought from home, and afterwards there was pizza, bagel slices, orange slices, bananas, cookies, and cupcakes too. These guys did a good job, but there were not very many runners for either marathon event. Many thanks to Doug and his crew.

"This is a great winter event" (about: 2016)

| 1 Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The race director and his team put on an excellent event. You can tell they're runners. Everything was just right. The race director even makes the medals and awards by hand - that's a level of commitment to the event that I've never seen before. The course is an indoor running/walking track in a college rec center. Ample parking, ample restrooms. The field is small enough that there's plenty of room to run. The track seems to be reinforced concrete covered by a carpet that is thick, but not very cushioned. Softer than running on the street, with a good footing. They only run a marathon or half marathon here, so there aren't any 5K runners or relay participants. Just marathoners, and most of them seemed to be Maniacs. That's a whole different vibe from big urban races, where there are tons of first timers and non-runners. These folks are all friendly and polite, but they show up and get to work. Nobody stops right in front of you, in the middle of the course, to take a selfie.

"Fun Event" (about: 2016)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was fun. Great people who know what they're doing. The track and the switching directions every half hour kept me motivated to stay on pace all day. Showers at the race venue, and the Goshen Brewery nearby for some post-race recovery. I'll be back!

"Great running surface" (about: 2013)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my first indoor marathon and I enjoyed it. The top-end, new running surface on the four lane, 208 meter track was very easy on the feet. The race was very well organized by experienced runners. The field size of only 30 runners was just right...more and the traffic would have been difficult with all the passing going on. The lap counting was superbly done...no way any sane human could keep track of his/her own laps. The direction reversal every 30 minutes was vital. A good run if you want to run inside in shorts during the midwest winter. But register early, this race does fill up.

"204 laps of fun!" (about: 2012)

| 2 Maple Leaf Indoor Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I am no stranger to indoor marathons having 4 under my belt prior to the 'double' at Maple Leaf. This is a well run race, organized and staffed by people who run and who know how to do it right. Things to expect: no hassle registration pickup on the mornings of each race; favorable 'weather' conditions; a good running surface (I understand that it might even get better with some expected upgrades later this year); a great variety/mix of music with something for everyone; tables at all four corners for your placement of drinks, snacks, etc.; supplemental gatorade/water and volunteers to refill your personal bottles; complimentary photographs; chip timing with laps projected on a large screen (and if you can't read the screen, volunteers can help with that too); reversal of direction every 30 minutes; a supportive group of fellow runners; a supportive (but small) group of spectators and a race director who responds to emails and enjoys the races as much as the rest of the field. I only include the following for 'full disclosure' for those who find it important. (1) bathrooms are downstairs and around a corner; (2) shirts are nice/technical but unisex and oversized. Another indoor marathon has all runners wear a bib with their name on their back so you can cheer others on by name. Maple Leaf didn't do that and it might be good to do in the future, nevertheless, everyone was very supportive. If you like to combine sightseeing with your races there are several things to do to make a few extra days worthwhile - Recreational Vehicle/Motor Home Hall of Fame (really, it was fun); in South Bend the College Football Hall of Fame and Notre Dame University. There are other sights also but it was cold so we chose indoor activities. Oh did I mention it was 204 laps?

"Perfect indoor marathon" (about: 2011)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 If you have one indoor marathon to run in your life, this is the best choice. Everything was perfect: the chip timing, the college track, the ambiance, the T-shirt, the medal... in fact, almost everything! My time was not as fast as expected, but that is another story! |
