You would be hard-pressed to find a more exciting race than this. Runners are taken 42K from the town of Goose Bay to a small village. After a talk on the history of trapping, the small group is off through the wilderness on a paved road. The scenery is fantastic, and support is mainly by bicycles, including most of the doctors from the local emergency department. The course is rolling hills with one major challenge at about 35 km. The real thrill of the race comes at the finish line where tents are set up in a small field. Cold runners (this is Labrador) can go inside to warm up by a wood stove. All around the field food is available - smoked char, fried atlantic salmon, moose stew, caribou soup, fried bread dough with local berry jam... it's heaven. I don't think anyone missed having no bagels.
The night after the race included a great meal with hilarious entertainment.
Labrador is an expensive place to fly to, but if you are looking for a brilliant and unusual race, this is it.
