The 26th edition of the Vienna City Marathon will take place on 19th April 2009. That is one week earlier than originally planned. Organisers decided to change the date to avoid the very busy last Sunday in April 2009, when the London Marathon and other marathons will take place.

Kenyans swept the 2008 Vienna City Marathon taking the first eight places at the race, the victor, Abel Kirui, setting the course record in 2:07:38. Two more runners finished inside 2:09: Duncan Kibet was second in his debut with 2:08:33 while Paul Biwott ran 2:08:53. In the women's race defending champion Luminita Talpos won in 2:26:43, the third fastest ever in the history of the race and Tomo Morimoto was second with 2:29:01 and Beatrice Omwanza was third in 2:37:36.

There was more honour for the winners of the 25th Vienna City Marathon a day after the race: The President of Austria Mr Heinz Fischer invited Kenya's Abel Kirui and Romania's Luminita Talpos for a reception to his office in the famous Wiener Hofburg which is next to the finish line of the race. The President is a runner himself and had met winners of the race in some previous years. 25 year-old Abel Kirui had established a course record on Sunday with 2:07:38 while defending champion Luminita Talpos had clocked 2:26:43. With world-class times, 30,072 runners altogether and 300,000 spectators the jubilee race was the greatest running event ever seen in Austria.

Kenya's Abel Kirui won the 25th edition of the Vienna City Marathon with a new course record. The 25 year-old Kenyan clocked 2:07:38 and achieved the first sub 2:08 time in the history of the event. The men's race produced the best ever results of the Vienna City Marathon with three runners finishing inside 2:09. Duncan Kibet was second with 2:08:33 while Paul Biwott (both Kenya) ran 2:08:53. In warm weather conditions with temperatures over 20 degrees Celsius at the end of the race defending champion Luminita Talpos won again. The 35 year-old Romanian clocked 2:26:43 which is the third fastest ever in the history of the Vienna City Marathon. Tomo Morimoto (Japan) was second with 2:29:01 while Beatrice Omwanza (Kenya) took third in 2:37:36.
