"Great Course, Great Swag, Smalltown Race" (about: 2019)

You could not ask for a better course, two loops through University and surrounding area and flat. ~3 miles on crushed stone trail offered soft surface for feet and good views of creek/changing leaves. Nice touch to give runners flowers to honor Marshall team in last mile and football to cover last 100 yards, takes your mind off of self and places it in better areas for that last mile. Good swag too, nice medal, warm quarter zip pullover sweatshirt, Goodr sunglasses, and fresh grilled hamburgers at finish line. Only 372 participants in marathon so 2nd loop got sparse at times, but overall a great race!

Although this is not a huge event, the race director and all volunteers were very helpful and cheerful. Not many spectators, but that is not important. Plenty of aid stations - water and Gatorade only and a few pretzels. I usually bring my own supplies so again that is no big deal - you learn when running small events. Course was fine and even though it was a double loop, I saw something different both times. Marathoners got to run past the memorial and place a carnation. Fun finishing on the field but when I 'spiked' the ball at the finish it almost hit me in the face! Guess I had better stick to running and not football.

We watched the movie the Monday before our trip and we're excited to see the sites. Google maps led us horribly astray on the way to the cemetery and a state trooper helped us find it. Good stuff. Dinner at Angelos was yummy. Parking was easy. Except for the pesky halfers, the start was fine. Good aid stations. The fake finish line was dumb. Not funny. The boys handing out footballs near the finish line didn't offer me one and that was crappy. But, a great experience for checking off another state.

"Great Swag..but" (about: 2011)

First I'll admit, I'm not a fan of 2 loop courses.. When your trying to do a marathon, it's nice to have new scenery to help pull you along, and seeing some parts of this course 4 times, was frustrating. Very little crowd support, but water stations were manned by cheerful volunteers and the runners were super friendly and encouraging. No expo to speak of, but the brooks tech shirts and jackets were impressive and the medal is adorable.

My main complaint was the finish line food. For those of us in the back of the pack we got a water bottle.. and a hamburger as the only option... 1/2 marathoners had tons of Little Debbie snack cakes and chips to choose from. But from a marathon that bills itself as Healthy Hungtington this is embarassing. Since I had just done Indy's Hospital sponsored event 3 weeks ago, where they had tons of fresh fruit, veggie burgers, and veggie subs from subway as options, I guess I got spoiled.

Overall , an Okay small sized marathon.

Loved the easy access to start line (you can stand inside until the start) - easy, with free parking. Finishing in the stadium was a nice touch. Plenty of well managed hydration stops, free dinner the night before, and the fleece and tech T were great. Post-run massage!

The course was FLAT (my wife BQ'd), and the run through the park was scenic, as was the 100 yards along the river. Otherwise, until the stadium finish, not much to see. Be prepared to run alone for much of the race due to the small number of entrants.

"Good small race; could be great with improvements" (about: 2007)

Smaller race - more personable, and great for recreational runners like me. Very flat and comfortable course. Road closings would make the running on uneven roads much easier, and increase the safety of the course. I'm frustrated that race results are still not posted after almost TWO days!!! Could be an amazing race with a few modifications. I would run it again.

"Great Small Marathon" (about: 2007)

The organizers have obviously taken the best practices from all the great marathons and combined them into the Marshall Marathon. It's super organized and friendly. The packet pick-up and pre-race dinner are easy and efficient. Race day parking is free/convenient/plentiful. There are enough port-a-potties and fluid stations for a race twice this size (400-500) and most of the volunteers are well trained and enthusiastic. The course is flat and straight. Much of the road does have a bit of a crown that cramped my left calf a few times. Finishing in the stadium (on turf) was exciting and felt good on the feet too! I can't believe this race doesn't have thousands trying to BQ. It's a GREAT small race.

"Average - A few small changes would help a lot" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 3rd Marshall University Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

Pros:
- flat course - with 3-4 short but steep underpasses
- good weather
- friendly volunteers
- small field of runners - no crowds
- ample parking
- stadium finish is nice

Cons:
- most of the course is open to traffic
- aid stations use plastic and Styrofoam cups
- aid stations had different flavors of gator-ads
- roads had a steep crown - forced to run on a slope
- several places had to run on concrete and sidewalks
- last 1/2 mile through Marshall is on sidewalks and bricks
- course maps are terrible - poor quality photocopy from newspaper
- very slow in posting results

Some very minor changes could make this a very nice little marathon; as it is, it's a little below average.

First Marathon

Nice, flat course. My first marathon, so no comparisons. A few fans scattered along the course. The weather was perfect. Would recommend this marathon to anyone. Only negative comment would be small cups only half-full at water stops.

B. K. from Ohio (11/6/2006)
"Course is flat as a pancake" (about: 2006)

50+ previous marathons | 1 3rd Marshall University Marathon

The course winds around the town of Huntington and makes a couple loops in a very nice park. Volunteers are great and the post-race food is amazing. The downside is the sidewalk running after 14 miles, which is quite annoying and continues for three miles along a busy road with active traffic. The rest of the course has excellent traffic control, but running on cement sidewalks was depressing. Would also like a couple stations to offer bananas, gels and the like. Entry fee is very reasonable, shirt is great and the medal is wonderful. Would do it again if you can get us off the sidewalks.
