"Fun little race, but apparently in decline." (about: 2018)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 The course is mainly flat, with four bridge crossings. The inclines can be tough, comparably, but the views from the bridges are wonderful. Wind does come in off the Columbia River, and if you're not ready for it, it will take the starch out of you. Five-and-a-half miles of headwinds in the second half of the race. On this basis alone, it is not a PR course. Notable lack of portables, and mile markers were not particularly accurate. Plenty of aid stations! The volunteers were great, and although there were very few spectators, they were friendly and lively! They are unfortunately partnered with a hotel (Shilo Inn) that is a dump. The course begins and ends there, and they had packet pickup in the hotel's lobby. Had I known about the hotel (filthy, poorly managed, and with atrocious customer service), I would have had trouble justifying the trip. Fewer finishers each year, or so I've been told. If you can get to a different hotel (there are plenty within a mile of Shilo Inn), the race is worth running while it's still operating.

"A great marathon to cap the year and BQ" (about: 2018)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 Beautiful paved course, over major bridges and mostly on the water. 3 Rivers Road Runners are truly committed to putting on a well staffed event. Aid stations every 2 miles were very helpful. I would recommend this marathon to anyone who wants a roadtrip. The start finish line was at the hotel which gave me a great place to stay cheap. Even moved checkout back to 2 PM for participants

"Not what it used to be" (about: 2017)

| 3 Tri-Cities Marathons
COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 1 I have run this race 3 times, but not for several years. This used to be an excellent, small marathon, but I must report, unfortunately, it has gone way downhill. Of primary importance: the course was poorly marked, had no mile markers after 13, and did not have enough race marshals to direct runners. If I didn't already know the course, I could have easily gone off course (I heard that some runners did). Of secondary importance: race started 5 minutes late (making runners stand in very cold, foggy conditions), aid stations and finish line were poorly supplied (bagels, water and bananas? C'mon, this is 2017!) and the turnout was substantially lower than in the past. If you are looking for a marathon, I cannot recommend running this race.

"A Bridge Too Far" (about: 2015)
50+ previous marathons
| 1 Tri-Cities Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This is a wonderful smaller marathon and half along the Columbia River. The Marathon route includes going up and over the I-182 bridge once after mile 1 and again after mile 24. Getting up to it is about a 100 foot climb, tough after 24 miles. Being feet from high speed Interstate trucks is not pleasant either. The other two bridge crossings are scenic and much less stressful. You might not notice this elevation challenge from the website chart. It is scaled from 0 to 1000 feet, even though the entire route is within 300 to 450 feet. So look and ponder carefully. Extremely well organized event, though. Volunteers at water/energy-drink stops were almost always (except once) able to get you what you wanted AS you got there - very helpful! Plenty of food left for later-finishing marathoners. Route well marked with each mile. Great Finisher's Medal. Good quality T-shirt. Not a large event, despite the half and relay teams, so not a lot of spectators or hoopla, but a beautiful area to run through, mostly on a bike path. Without that one Interstate bridge (done twice), this would be an almost perfect Washington Marathon. Even with that bridge, it is still a worthy event, for the scenic river, fine organization and exceptional volunteers.

"This is a Great Smaller Marathon." (about: 2014)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Tri-Cities Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This was a great smaller marathon for those that don't need big crowds of spectators or a band on every corner to keep you going. The race organizers did a great job. For those that aren't the fastest runners don't be scared off by the 5 hour time limit. There are 2 early start times. All you have to do is email the race director requesting an early start time. He emailed me back in less than 30 minutes of my request. The course was run mostly on a running/walking/bike paved path along the Columbia river so dealing with vehicle traffic is at a minimum however there are only a few places for spectators to see you if that's an issue for you. The course is mostly flat except for 4 bridge crossings over the river. The volunteers were friendly and the aid stations were well staffed. If you do take an early start you may need a hydration pack for the first hour before volunteers show up but they were on sight at both stations I hit before the official start time of the race.

"Fast well organized smaller town race" (about: 2013)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is a great smaller race. Well organized, a race director who cares and answers email questions promptly, and solid communication via emails and fb updates as the race approaches. Felt like a small group of friends gathering before the gun. Mostly flat course except bridge crossings. Expect a little (or a lot) of wind. Not a PB for me but close, and the awards were awesome beer glasses. Loved it.

"Great for first time marathoners!" (about: 2013)
1 previous marathon
| 1 Tri-Cities Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 The Tri-Cities Marathon was my first marathon and I highly recommend it. The course begins at the Shiloh Inn and mostly goes along the walking/biking path along the Columbia River. It is mostly flat and there are a few hills when you go up and down the zig zags to get on and off the bridges. The event is well organized and the volunteers are very friendly. If you are driving here from out of town, I recommend staying at the Shiloh Inn because it is where the race begins and ends. There are a number of restaurants nearby including Applebees and Denny's. It was helpful that there were early start times (6am and 7am) for the runners who needed a little bit longer to finish the race. If you are starting at 6am, I recommend wearing a head lamp because it is still dark and you need a light in some parts to show you the way. The Race Director Miguel Reyna was very helpful when I had questions about the race. It was also helpful to have the four transition points in case you are planning to meet someone to exchange water bottles, although they do have aid stations along the way as well. Overall, I was really impressed and would recommend this marathon to others!

"Potentially PR course but little crowd support" (about: 2012)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Tri-Cities Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 Flat course but there are a few hairpins and 4 bridge crossings which add about a 30 sec handicap in my opinion. Lack of crowd support and few runners to pace off might be a factor for some who are trying to BQ. In 2012 there was almost no wind, no sun, and temps in the high 40s so almost perfect conditions. About 200 runners in the full marathon I believe. Course is almost entirely paved. Volunteers are very helpful, making up for lack of crowds.

| 4-5 Tri-Cities Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a first class marathon in every respect from the organization to the helpful volunteers and even the fans that come out on race day. The course is flat and fast and the views along the Columbia River are amazing. With a low entry fee and the start and finish right outside the hotel room, it can't be beat. Once again, well done to all involved.

"Great Small Marathon" (about: 2012)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Tri-Cities Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 Great fast race when weather lines up correctly. Which it did in 2012 with no wind and rain and cool temps. Very little fan support. Plenty of aid stations (every 2 miles or so). Will run this again. |
