I love this race. I've run it several times over the past 12 years, and it's a great training run and a good way to put a qualifying time in the bank. Four laps around the Aberdeen Proving Ground might not sound very interesting, but it's really not bad, and pit crews can see runners regularly without moving around. With four laps, the competitors are spread over 10K, rather than 42K, so it works well for the number of competitors. The course is flat, and good for pacing. If you aren't certain that you are ready to run a complete marathon, the course passes the start every 10K, and so a runner can easily drop out early. Race organizers are friendly and competent, and amenities (T-Shirts, certificates, awards, and food) are better than those found at many larger races.

You'll be Boston bound if you can run well alone (General Comments)

A Runner from Washington, DC (4/29/01)

This was my first marathon and it might have spoiled me. This course is FLAT and fast. The course (4 laps) didn't challenge me at all for the first half and then didn't punish me too badly the second half. The course is uninteresting but don't worry about the 4 lap part of this race, it didn't bother me at all, plus it was nice knowing what was next over the last miles.
The race was very well organized although it lacked some of the amenities of the larger marathons. (No gel stops, bands or adoring mobs here)
The fans... well for the most part there weren't any as it's run on a military proving grounds, on a winter weekend. However, the volunteers on the course were incredibly supportive and 'got to know you' during the course of the race.
I suggest this race for experienced runners (though not necessarily with marathon experience.) You need to be able to run alone without a whole lot of support. This is not a race for the person who just wants to run a marathon for the sake of running one (even though it is flat.)
I was just trying to qualify (3:10) but this race track let me coast in with a 2:56. This race allowed me the honor of conquering the marathon by myself.
WARNING: Boston is MUCH tougher. Do NOT let this race fool you into thinking that marathons are easy... Trust me, I found out the hard way.
I hope this helps, feel free to email me with questions.
Enjoy the miles!
The goat.
