Wayne La Groix from Fort Mc Murray (9/14/2009) "One of my favorite courses" (about: 2009) 50+ previous marathons \| 4-5 Oil Sands Marathons COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 I think this is the second time that I've written about a race. The weather was perfect, the trails had been rebuilt and were in great shape, and the organization was excellent. This race has a small-town feel to it that, in a way, adds to the sense of community. If you want fan support along the way, this is not the race. However, if you want to listen to the geese flying over your head, run on shaded trails, and interact with enthusiastic aid station volunteers, then this is the race. The race was a good pick-me-up, and a reminder of why I run. Thanks to everyone for a great experience.

M. from Lexington, Kentucky (7/8/2009) "Great people, beautiful course" (about: 2006) 4-5 previous marathons \| 1 Oil Sands Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 The marathon is run in conjunction with a 10K and half-marathon on beautiful, smooth trails through the woods. You run multiple loops, so you see the rest of the field several times as it gradually reduces to just the 30 or so marathon runners. Especially in the latter miles, it is a very peaceful atmosphere. The course is not flat but not what I would call hilly. The organizers, volunteers, and participants are a wonderful group of people, and Fort McMurray is an interesting (in a good way) place to visit. There isn't much crowd support, but those who did cheer the runners on were very friendly. Fluids were adequate, but it helps to bring your own gel.

L. from Alberta (9/13/2007) "Community Event" (about: 2007) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Oil Sands Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 You know a marathon is lauded by its participants when "Thanks to the director" take up your inbox for the next week or so afterward. What a community feel this race has, and who would've thought Ft. Mac could be so beautiful or boast such a fine trail system. Mostly wooded packed dirt, and some gravel, grass, and wood chips. The volunteers were great. Post-race food was great - the staples plus desserts! Race announcer was great. The MUSIC at start/finish was great! Awesome race shirt, medal, and lots of draw prizes. Aid every 2 KM or so. Everyone was welcoming. What a fantastic way to spend a relaxing weekend in an area of my province I've never before visited. The only add-on I'd suggest is perhaps some gels at the aid stations, and I'd suggest staying at a hotel other than Sawridge - there is probably better value closer to the race site. It was $211/night but the room was awfully average. Though meals there were... well, yum! Overall, this race was low-key but top-notch. I almost don't want to tell anyone about it because a large field would probably take something away from the atmosphere of this race. I appreciated the effort. Next year, 2008, is the 25th anniversary! I'll try to be back - and maybe get a glimpse of those notorious oil sands. "FINISHING IS WINNING," says the race shirt!
