Marathon de Nantes-Atlantique

This was my first marathon, and I thought that for a smaller marathon, it was great. Though there weren't many spectators, they were all very encouraging and friendly. It's a really beautiful landscape if you like the countryside; the Loire River is beautiful.

Although based in the city of Nantes, this marathon is basically rural. First and last quarter through city suburbs with the middle section along opposite banks of the Loire. So not a run for those who like city-center races with lots of support. Terrain very flat, just a couple of rises - (difficult for me to judge too well as I ran very slowly as had just had a virus, so was not on good form). Though the race start/finish (also pasta party, a poor expo, and number pick-up) are on city outskirts, the local transport facilities are superb, so no problem. It is in a big leisure/sport/exhibition park so, actually, there is lot to see and do. Free massage at end and tons of fruit. Sharp cut off time so not for ultra slow marathoners or walkers. Cups, not bottles - a downer, but lots of feed stations. About 2,000 runners this year, so a nice medium-sized event. Mainly local athletes, so if not French, go and boost visting runner numbers! (A runner from Jersey also there - so Channel Islands nicely represented!!).

Nantes is a wonderful city to visit and to run in. The marathon is very well organised and the runners very nice. The only problem is the route which is not the best, but it will be changed this year. I enjoyed the supporters, the flat roads, the perfect organization and the performance! After the race, you can even go to the big show!!!
