"Nice course; windy; hot; few spectators" (about: 2011)

Enjoyed the course, the Fayetteville trail system, UA's campus, and the town square. Spectators were minimal, but those who showed up were great.

Lots of aid stations, although more were needed near the midpoint of the marathon, and additional resources were needed as the botanical garden aid station ran out of water at one point. A few intersections were not clear as to which route to take. I will come back again, as I like visiting Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas.

"Well organized, tough course." (about: 2010)

Organization is good, drink stations good, scenery beautiful.

After-race care is good: food, drink, and massage.

The route at the end is too hilly. I realize that there are some limitations, but going up Dickson, then up Block really kills a chance to run a smooth finish. How about working the route toward College Ave. at LaFayette (or even farther east) running south, then turning west to the square? I liked the old route's finish better up Razorback Road... you could see the finish for a good distance and work toward it. The current finish is up a hill, around a corner, and it's over.

All that being said, I'll probably be back in 2011.

"My first marathon, but not my last!" (about: 2010)

What a gorgeous day! Perfect for my first marathon! I would definitely do it again, but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of publicity/sponsors. I got first place in my age group and I really wanted a plaque, but I ended up with a coffee mug instead. I think they should using timing chips in the future. This event should be sponsored by the University or by Wal Mart, and maybe it would become a bigger event.

I felt pretty lonely for the last 5 miles, and that was where I needed motivation the most. Most of the voluneers were sitting in lawn chairs reading magazines. And I only found one station that had GU, even though I think a few others did. I felt like I had to ask for it.

Also, this is kind of weird, but I heard that people were cheating. Someone said they saw a girl hop out of a truck with a bib on and start running in some random location. That's really not fair to everyone else who trained really hard to be where they are.

"Fun and Very Challenging Marathon!" (about: 2010)

The 2010 Hogeye Marathon was on a perfect day - 50 degrees at start, reaching the mid 60's, with beautiful, clear, blue skies and a light breeze. The race course has some challenging hills, especially in the first and last couple of miles. The water and Gatorade stations were well positioned and staffed. I totally enjoyed this event and I'm definitely planning to do it again!

"Nearly Perfect Small-Town Marathon" (about: 2010)

A very, very well organized race in a great town.

The course was hilly for the first 5 miles, but nothing too bad until a few inclines during the last 2 miles. The course was stocked with aid stations (seemingly one every mile) - and the aid stations on the back half had gel packets. The course went through a handful of residential areas, but altogether was very scenic.

I had some cramping issues for the last 8 miles, and had volunteers asking how I was doing. Things got a little lonely between miles 8 and 11 - but otherwise there were volunteers and supporters along the entire course.

The post-race festivities were great as well. The chutes were well staffed, and water, Gatorade, hot dogs and beer were just a few steps away. The host hotel (less than 2 blocks from the start/finish) also had massages available - with no waiting at all.

I was surprised that the race didn't use chip timing - but it didn't matter at all. My only suggestion would be that pacers would be a nice - but certainly not necessary - addition in future years.

Fayetteville was a wonderful host city. I will be back. Thanks very much to all of the great volunteers that controlled traffic, handed out water and Gatorade, and offered encouragement along the route. Special thanks to the Pirate Crew on the final stretch for their offerings! Great job.

"Good race, friendly people, nice area" (about: 2009)

The course had some significant hills at the start, but just small, rolling hills after that. There were lots of out-and-back loops, which made the course kind of confusing and possibly longer, since you can't always cut the corners tight. It was very windy this year, which added to the challenge for me; but overall, the course wasn't that bad. There were not many spectators, maybe due to the cold and wind, but those that were there were enthusiastic. The race was well organized, with frequent aid stations that had wonderful, helpful volunteers. The free massages had ended by the time most marathoners were finishing. I guess they were just for the half-marathoners, though most of the runners did run the half-marathon. But you could go into the hotel and warm up, which was nice, and they had plenty of food. Good race!

"Scenic but hilly, small marathon." (about: 2009)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Hogeye Marathon

It was very windy this year, with lots of hills, especially at the start and the finish. Pretty course in the Ozarks, good organization, and few but vocal spectators. There were plenty of aid stations, with both water and Gatorade.

If you want to run hills, this is a great course; if you want a PR, go somewhere else. Overall, though, this was a good race.

"Hills, Hills, Hills" (about: 2009)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Hogeye Marathon

I thought the organization, the volunteers and the water/Gatorade stops were excellent. I did not like not having the chip timing. This was my first half marathon to participate in that did not have that. The hills are a killer. If you are a novice, or are used to running in flat terrain, I wouldn't advise doing this one. Otherwise, it was a good event... just watch out for those hills. After all, it is Arkansas!

"How did I get a PR here?" (about: 2008)

Attractive scenery made Hogeye worth doing. There were a few little out-and-backs if you like that sort of thing. Crowd support was minimal, to put it mildly, but volunteers were warm and encouraging. A few times runners were very close to traffic. I was surprised to finish more than eight minutes faster than Little Rock for a PR despite some wicked hills (mainly at beginning and end). I liked the cartoonish hog medal.

"spectacular marathon" (about: 2008)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Hogeye Marathon

This was my first running of the Hogeye Marathon and I was impressed with the organization, course marking, volunteer enthusiasm and support. The course was scenic and interesting with lots of challenging hills. Fayetteville is a great town to visit. Very funky! My family enjoyed the weekend and spectating was made easy by the course layout. We definitely will come back.
