"I liked it!!!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

This was my first marathon. The course was nice, however, some more markings along the bike path would have been nice. I kind of felt lost most of the time on the path. The support (aid stations) was great. The downtown area was nice and the finish in the arena was pretty cool. The weather was in the 30's at the early start but the rest of the day was JUST RIGHT, 50's-60's.
I just might try this again. I'd like to do another one now that I know what to expect. I live and, therefore, train at an altitude of 5000 feet. It was a very plesant run at 1000 ft in Wichita.

"Great for First Timer" (General Comments)

As a first time marathoner and nothing to compare it to, I had a fantastic experience! The course was scenic as is worked through Wichita and McConnell AFB into the downtown area. Fans were great along the way and gave lots of encouragement. Finish downtown in the staduim was a great .

"excellent course - great weather" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my second marathon - the first one was 21 years ago! The organization, course, weather and support was awesome. It was a small marathon and had a very flat course. The weather was perfect and I plan on doing it again. The support was great considering the size of the marathon. Wichita is a lovely town - no complaints!

"Well-Organized Smaller Marathon" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I decided to run the only marathon held in Kansas and the result was a pleasant surprise. The course traditionally had gone through McConnell Air Force base, but was altered this year. The course started in Derby, a suburb of Wichita, moved up to Wichita and through downtown. The last eight miles were an out and back on a wide concrete biking and walking path along the Arkansas River. Psychologically, that was very painful. The marathon ended in the baseball stadium. We ended up running around the outfield and finished at homeplate. Despite being in Kansas, I would characterize the terrain as 'rolling hills' as opposed to flat.

It was unseasonably warm in 2001 with temperatures in the 60s at the start and in the mid-upper 70s at the end. Another plus, the awards are given in 5 yr age groups and as high as SIX deep in some age categories. For a race that typically has 300-500 finishers that is quite a lot. The accommodations at the Hyatt, the host hotel were great and inexpensive. There are several nice restaurants in the Old Town area of Wichita near the hotel. I would definitely like to do this race again under cooler conditions.

"Another well organized event by Runwichita" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

Although this is a medium sized marathon, it is truly a well organized and fun race. The fans who do come out to cheer make this fun. Running through McConnell AFB is a unique experience and shows a great sense of community involvement. Don't overlook Wichita when you plan your next fall marathon.

"Well organized with early start time for slow folk" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

I enjoyed this run for 3 years running. The 1 hour early start is great and the course is unique. The organization needs easier access to register online however.

A Runner from North Newton, Kansas, USA (5/26/2000)
"A much improved marathon" (about: 1999)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

The 1999 version of the Wichita Marathon was much improved over previous versions of the race. The point-to-point course takes you from a small Wichita suburb through McConnell AFB, including the mile of B1-B's on the flight-line to a stadium finish. Plans are to continue with improved race course. Wichita has set itself apart from other medium sized marathons. While no one aspect of the marathon is outstanding, everthing about the marathon is done well. It is truely a marathon to put on your to-do list.
